One small step

Grumbleshanks checked his dagger and net to make sure they were ready for a quick draw. Satisfied, he hefted his silver-leafed spear and motioned for silence and for Hring to lead with him. He intended to sneak up to intersection T then creap up sewer segment TL. Heart thumping, the druid damned his forgetfullness; he hadn't said good night, good morning, or possibly goodbye to Squiggles. "Hang tight my slippery ink sack," he thought to his long time companion. He received a dismayed and confused message in return. "Farewell," he sighed softly and stepped into the darkness flanked by Hring and followed by the goonies.

If we get in a battle I intend to step back and let the Tall folk engage first. Since I wield a spear, can I thrust between my crew? I will cast cure light wounds should someone take a grievous injury. If more rats come charging down the sewer, I will entangle one.

  1. Is the spear a reach weapon? I will have to look up the answer to that question, one way or another, but if it's not a reach weapon, then you can't attack that far away.

  2. It appears the question is whether you have a "spear" or a "longspear". A "spear" is apparently meant to be a stabbing/throwing weapon, whereas a "longspear" is meant to be a long stabbing weapon.

Both can be used well against cavalry, but the spear is short and has a range but no reach, whereas the longspear has reach but no range.

    Which was your intent?

  3. Then or now? =P I will stick with a spear, longspears seem terribly cumbersome.

  4. Well, you can still throw your spear in combat, if you don't mind retrieving it later. I was giving you the opportunity to clarify your original choice. I think it would be very unfair to say, "There are two kinds of spears, but you already chose the throwing kind, so that's what you have" if you didn't know there was another kind.

  5. Also, remember that these are halfling-sized weapons, not human-sized, so it's not more cumbersome than a longspear would be to a human.

  6. Also, you can entangle people in your net from range. You can throw it 10 ft, and a medium creature takes up a 5 ft. square in battle.

  7. Sorry. I was incorrect there. It's Range increment is 10 ft. It can be thrown farther but at a penalty.
