Cast your net wide

Grumbleshanks mimed the presence of the two direrats and his plan to burst around the corner and cast his net. Following their promise to charge behind him, he readied his net. He took a quick peek around the corner to zero in on the rats. He took a deep breath, nodded, kissed his net, and sprang around the corner with the others right behind. As soon as he was close enough, he let the net fly. In the same fluid motion, he stepped into the mucky, poopy sewage trench to let the others charge past as he readied his spear.

Initiative: (make a difference for ranged?): 10+2=12

Net cast: 15+4=19 (do I get both?)

  1. Roll again to hit to see if you got them both.

As for initiative, this was a surprise attack, so the initiative will be used for the next round. It is important, but not to find out whether you get to throw your net or not.

  2. The rats' initiative is:
    Roll(1d20)+3:
    8,+3
    Total:11

You go first. I have added your battle to the spreadsheet, as well.

  3. Net toss for second rat: 16+4=20

    Taaa dahhhh!

I attack, if I have time to draw and whack them with the blunt end of my spear like a quarterstaff.

    Whack:13+2=15

  4. Was the blunt end supposed to be for nonlethal damage, or to keep from damaging the net, or what?

  5. After you whack the rat, Hring runs up to join in the fight. He follows your lead and attacks the same rat with the butt of his rapier.

    to hit:
    Roll(1d20)+3:
    19,+3
    Total:22

    Critical?
    Roll(1d20)+3:
    1,+3
    Total:4

    Nope.

A hit! A most palpable hit!

    Damage:
    Roll(1d6)+3:
    6,+3
    Total:9

And with two mighty blows, the first of the dire rats is destroyed.

Arngrim rushes up to the other dire rat, attacking with a silver club:
    To hit:
    Roll(1d20)+2:
    11,+2
    Total:13

    Miss. Sad day.

Hench 1 does the same, swiping at the rat with a silver light mace:
    To hit:
    Roll(1d20)+0:
    16,+0
    Total:16

    Damage:
    Roll(1d6)+0:
    1,+0
    Total:1

He hit him, but he really didn't handle that mace that well.

Hench 2 attacks the same rat, swinging a silver light mace at the rats head:
    To hit:
    Roll(1d20)+0:
    20,+0
    Total:20

    Critical?:
    Roll(1d20)+0:
    11,+0
    Total:11
    Nope.

    Damage:
    Roll(1d6)+0:
    6,+0
    Total:6

Another crushing blow, and just like that, the battle is over with. Hring knocked the first rat for a loop, and the second henchman finished the second off. The rats barely knew what hit them before this whirlwind of activity swept them from the sewers into the cold clutches of death.
