What's this book...

"I have heard of Lathander... I buried many of this town's priests after they were killed mysteriously in the temple following the earthquake." He said somewhat distractedly. He looked at the book of history, feeling an incredibly magic pull from it, one that he couldn't figure out (even with a 26 roll).
"I don't follow Lathander... his doctrine is fairly naive and boorish. His emphasis on healing is appreciated in this dark world." Lathander had been one of his least favorite God's, often described in his religion classes as the God of the sloths and slumberous. He picked up the book and began to look through it. As he did he cast detect magic on the object at the various pages.

  3. Oh boy... if there is a destructive magical spell in that book I am going to be suspicious how Beranhond, with a 26, didn't know about it...

  4. Suddenly, as Beranhond opens the book, a conflagration erupts from its pages, burning everything within 20 feet of him. Beranhond was quick enough to drop the book and dive to the side, avoiding the worst of the damage, but taking 9 damage.

Likewise, Nym sees the fireball erupting from the desk, clutches the light orb to her chest, and dives under the table, still taking 10 damage.

Darvin, still standing guard out in the hallway with Thjodolf and the henchmen, hurriedly presses himself against a wall, urging the others to do the same. Darvin receives 9 damage from the spell, Thjodolf receives 12 damage, Scriptus receives 11 damage, and Codex receives 9 damage.

The sudden flame also has the effect of starting the desk and the table as well as the papers and books on the table on fire.

As to why Beranhond didn't notice it, it was a magic trap, with a perception DC of 28, but leaving a slight magical aura. Sorry. It's how the spell works.

  5. I actually pocketed all the letters/papers on the desk, so those are alright.

  6. But, not the stuff on the table... which is too bad.

  7. It might be salvageable, if you put the fire out.
