Housekeeping!

Bleh ... training, Gurkirat thought. Why do I have to learn to be a sailor? That's why we hired sailors! His attempts to avoid all the sessions only half succeeded. Success because he didn't go to them, but failure because he was penalized with more work on repairing the vessel. Repairing was better than learning the lingo from a person with a high opinion of themselves. Just give me a book to read all the information and save some time for everyone.

Thus Gurkirat found himself back in the cargo hold resting against a crate and fiddling with his clarinet. His hands refused to cooperate correctly because of the exhaustion from handling so many ropes ... sheets. Shit! Traveling out to sea wasn't supposed to involve all this work and learning. He still hadn't decided on a room yet, which was why he was here in the hold. His current quarters allowed him to hide easier as the hold is somewhat large and could hide his small form from anyone who might be looking.

Rumors on the ship said that they would be heading out soon and from his perspective the repairs were proceeding quite nicely. Probably another two days before the could head out and those days couldn't pass fast enough. Ugh.

So what rooms are available anyway. I read through the posts but couldn't figure what rooms were taken. If you could just post what your rooms are somewhere easy for me to find. Say it by the numbers on the boat map.

  1. Crew rooms:
    Beranhond: 11 - The ship's office.
Darvin: 10 - The forward port officer's cabin.
    Gurkirat: Wherever you decide.
Nym: 10 - The forward starboard officer's cabin.
Talathel: The crow's nest - the main mast.

Male hands: 6 - the Forecastle.
    Female hands: 3 - The master's cabin.

There is still the aft officer's cabin available.

  2. Of course, the three ladies in the master's cabin might want to switch places with Darvin after being told it was most likely to be hit in battle... :P

  3. But, they won't be sitting around in a cabin in the middle of a battle... they will be up in the rigging or firing cannons.

  4. But you're not always attacked when you're up and waiting for it, which is why I'd be all up for moving if I were them.

  5. It is agreed. I would say he should try to persuade them and make a diplomacy check.

    Darvin, are you interested?

  6. To be honest, Darvin really doesn't care. But I do agree with Erin and Dan on this one. It seems likely that once that piece of information was revealed the women would probably want to move. Whittaker just wants the women to have the Captain's Cabin because 1) he views it as some sort of gender equality and 2) to bug me.

  7. They could still move out of it, and you could use the cabin for some other purpose.

  8. Well, actually I just don't want Nick to wind up with the captains cabin. Not necessarily because of gender equality as separation often masks true equality, but moreso to annoy you and to level status symbols.

I still find that entire argument to be a tad ridiculous. The Captain's cabin is on the same level as the crew bunk room, and actually the bunk room is probably a more dangerous location than the captain's cabin.

As for the point about being asleep when an attack comes - there are always watches awake on board watching out for attacks. The likelihood of a ship sneaking in and deliberately targeting the captains cabin is quite small. Incidentally, I am drawing up watch rotations, so if there is anyone you want to be on watch with do let me know.

Further, the only time the Captain's cabin would be target exclusively would be if the ship was being attacked from the rear - which was not all that common as there is a much smaller area for cannon fire to hit. If they were attacking from the rear they would be targeting the rudder.

But of course, it does depend on the quality of Darvin's diplomacy... or I would argue, bluff check.

However, regardless of the outcome I am positive that Darvin will not be able to move into the captain's cabin, one way or another. Perhaps we could tear down the walls and expand the conference room and fill with maps and charts? Or we could fill it with treasure.

  9. I retract the above, Nick has agreed to go where I have wanted, so it is fair of me to relent and not torment him by obfuscating his attempts to gain the larger cabin.

  10. I suppose the other number 10 room would be the sensible place to go. But maybe that's the guest room! I'll take it. The aft port sleeping quarter. Or officer's quarter. It might suggest that I know something and then sailors will ask me questions ...

  11. You could call yourself Lieutenant if you like - that might cause them to ask more questions.

  12. Or the ship's librarian! That would probably get them to avoid you unless they had book-ish questions. :)

  14. Brilliant Dan. That would fit with my bardic class too. I'll distribute a few more points into more knowledge to fit with my new title.
