From atop the table, Gurkirat was so surprised at the breakout of combat that he was unable to fish out the sling and a bullet until both sides had made an attack. He loaded up the sling with a regular bullet ... 'I didn't bring any bullets! Mother's milk in a cup!' He looked on the table and spotted the hard candies. 'These should work nicely' he mused as he loaded on up and let fly.
Sling: 6+4=10 - Miss!
I'm running out to go skiing. I'll add this to the spreadsheet when I get back in a few hours. I just wanted to get this up.
Darvin: Did you take a +1 bonus to a stat, as the ring offered?
Gurkirat: Sounds good.
Talathel: Yes, you did that right. No, you don't get another turn to go until after they take a turn. However, if he tries to move past you, you get an automatic attack of opportunity against him. Attacks of Opportunity happen when it's not your turn but somebody does something that allows you to quickly swipe at them, like moving past them, casting a spell, or fumbling for a new weapon.
Darvin: As Darvin grabs his two cutlasses, the two big goons swing their clubs at him. The one on Darvin's left hits solidly, striking Darvin's left arm, as Darvin ducks under the swing from the right.
Seeing the man holding her arms was injured, Nym smiled and looked at him, suddenly becoming an easier load to carry as she attempted laughing touch on the man.

The man burst into laughter, incapable of holding Nym, and drops her. She pulls the gag from her mouth saying, "That REALLY hurt!" She grins at the other man and winks as she prepares to cause the man holding her feet to burst out laughing as well.
Running forward, Beranhond forces himself around the crowd. Ocassionally hands grab him and he hears people say 'holy healer!' Ugh. Beranhond thinks to himself. As he nears the crowd he raises his sword and swings.
Attack: Roll(1d20)+3: 15,+3 Total:18 (nice)
Damage: Roll(1d8)+1: 6,+1 Total:7
He stabs through the thug's lower back, destroying the man's liver. "Guess we can't make an organ donor out of you."
Nym and Talathel: Seeing that he suddenly has Nym grappled by himself, the man had struggled to keep her controlled by himself. Having her in control, he continued to carry her and dropping her in the boat, facing her and preparing for the worst from the witch-woman. The man with the rapier, on seeing the laughing fit the man behind him was in, stood his ground, attacking Talathel again. Being a bit distracted, the effort was only half-hearted, and he missed. The third man continued to laugh, moving to the side of the boat as his laughter slowly subsides.
Nym: You were thrown in the boat, so you are lying prone in the boat, but not held. To stand up is a move action that will provoke an attack of opportunity from both men standing above you. Same with casting a spell.
Darvin: As you fight the voice comes back in your head, "That's the way lad. Now, ye should ne hesitate to throw some insults their way once in a while. Try, 'You fight like a dairy farmer!' I used that meself when I was alive."
Nym glared at the two men who had taken her onto the boat. "This REALLY isn't how you should treat a savior of the city!" She raised her hands and suddenly a thick fog grew around the boat obscuring sight of and within the boat. If they can't see me, their weapons, or anything really, do they still get an attack of opportunity? Nym laughs when she hears the suprised cries of her captors and jumps into the water over the side of the boat toward shore.
As she hits the water, Nym realizes she doesn't know how to swim. Luckily she jumped clear of her obscuring mist, but she quickly began to flounder in the water. "HELP!" She cried, before sinking under the surface.
Holding breath underwater (1d20)+0 v. DC 10 14
Luckily Nym was able to take a deep breath before sinking. She flailed uselessly trying to surface.
Shit... Darvin needs to get over there and help Nym swim. You can give her the pearl necklace that lets her breath underwater. He wants to give her a pearl necklace anyway.
Beranhond sure isn't going near the water. I think he sinks.
As Nym sinks into the cold water, all the sounds of the fight are blocked from her senses. She opens her eyes and the salt water stings them for a moment before she becomes used to it. She looks up at the surface and sees the shimmer of the fading light of the day as she sinks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nym was 11 and on her way with her friend, Morna, a Tiefling wizard, several other students, and the headmistress of the herbology school in Silverymoon through the Evermoors to Nesme to meet an old wizard to learn about herbs to the far North. The sun had fallen beneath the horizon and the sky was the deep blue only seen at dusk. The headmistress was telling the students about the herbs of the Evermoors, but Nym was far more interested in what lay beyond the path in the wild of the moors. She peered away from the fire into the growing night, listening and waiting. The sky grew into the deep velvet black of night and stars appeared. The headmistress sent the students to bed. Nym lay restless in her sleeping sack next to Morna. Finally, well into the night, Nym snuck out of her tent into the moors. Having grown up in the wild of the High Forest, she had no trouble navigating the dangerous soil of the moors. Soon she was out of sight of the group's campfire. She stood listening to the wind in the grass and the strange animals of the moor. Patiently she waited. After a good hour of standing still, scanning the moors, she saw in the distance a faint blue light in the distance. She was filled with the urge to chase after it, to find the being responsible for the light, and to join them. She resisted, and simply watched as the lights came and went in the distance, trying to tempt her further into the moors. As morning approached, the lights disappeared, and Nym returned to the camp.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pale blue light of the surface danced like the lights of the moor all those years before. Only this time touching that light would save rather than doom her. She reached her hand toward the surface and frantically tried to swim to the light.
Nym: You had a temporary Strength score of 4 from the Beladonna. When you made the save, that was erased, so I cleared that up on your character sheet, leaving you with only a -1 to your swim check.
What this means for you is that you got a 7 on your swim check, so you aren't sinking after all, and are just struggling, not making any progress. :) Would you still like to have the flashback?
Gurkirat wiffed so badly on the last throw and the enemies were getting away, so he hopped down and ran across the room to get a closer shot at the foes. (should that be my one turn or should I waste another piece of candy on these dudes)
Nym and Talathel: The big guy who had Nym's arms looks at the guy who had her legs and says, "What do ye think we ortin' ta do now?" The other man looks puzzled for a moment, then responds, "I'll dive in and get her, and you be ready to grab her from the boat. With that, he steps on the boat and dives over the other side. He is able to find Nym in the water, and grabs at her, but the slipperyness of the water causes him to lose her. The other brute does as told and steps onto the rowboat, waiting there for the two to surface. The man with the rapier again attacks Talathel, slashing him very effectively on the left thigh. Talathel, you are dealt 8 damage.
Beranhond, Darvin, and Gurkirat: The two goons with you attack again! The one attacking Darvin now gets desperate and tries to knock Darvin down. He fails, and Darvin attacks him as he tries it. Darvin's strike is deadly, and the man cries out as his chest grows a large hole in it, and he crumples to the ground. The one attacking Beranhond continues his tried and true tactic of aiming at Beranhond's head. His swing is easily deflected by Beranhond, who is not an idiot and blocks it with his shield.

Laughing Touch Concentration Check (1d20)+3 v. DC 17 (Cast Defensively or entangled, since underwater) 15+3, 18 Laughing Touch (1d20)+7 v. Reflex 7+7, 14

Hold Your Breath (Can be done Conx2 rounds, so this is it) (1d20) v. DC 11 13
Nym's senses are jumbled at having fought off her underwater attacker, and she flails uselessly in the water. Her lungs are bursting for air, and she begins to see black spots dancing in her eyes as she frantically tries to find the surface.
Nym: Where are you getting the rules for holding your breath from? If you are using the rules we developed for the smoke bombs, I believe we were doing it for Con X2, and you are using Con BONUS X2.

Beranhond, having easily blocked the sword, the stabs the man through his one kidney and slices across the other other kidney. He then takes off towards the shore and to Gurk and Talathel.
I don't think I described it very well, but I see it having an odd, slimy green cast to the blade, as if light has to pass through a thin layer of transparent slime before reflecting off the blade.
He is also vicious because his party was interrupted by idiotic goons who had the audacity to think this would be a good time to try to abduct someone.
I'll do that this weekend, and let you know when it's done. Also, the "Speed" quality on weapons is awesome. It gives them an additional attack. So you could, you know, attack twice with the same weapon in one round. Amazing!
Upon killing the man who had bothering him. Darvin looked towards the water and didn't see Nym anywhere. Then he noticed his half-elven prin....er, friend struggling in the water. He took off at a dead sprint in the direction of Nym and the rowboat.
It says Con times 2. It doesn't mean the +1,+2, etc. modifier, it means the Con score. That document also is a house rules document. At the top, there is a link to the regular rules. They seem very similar, so this one is not a bad reference, probably, I just thought you should know. :)
All Players: The thug in the boat (Thug 3) grabs an oar and attacks the newcomer, Darvin. As he bends down to grab the oar, Talathel and Darvin attack him, both hitting the brute and drawing a good amount of blood. Once he has the oar, he swipes at Darvin, and hits him in the head, knocking him back a bit, but not doing any serious damage. Darvin, take 4 damage. Thug 4 continues his assault on Talathel with his rapier, scoring an especially deep cut on Talathel's thigh, which begins gushing blood and soaking the ground. The goon in the water is able to maintain swimming, and tries once again to grapple with Nym, but she slips out of his grasp once again.

Swim Check (1d20)+1 from Gurkirat's playing v. DC 10 12+1, 13 (YAY!)
Underwater Nym hears the soft sound of a clarinet filtering through the water. She feels the sand and rocks of the ocean floor beneath her feet and pushes off hard toward the surface. As she breaks the surface, she gasps and splashes loudly. She is surprised and happy to see Darvin in the water ready to help her out. With help from Darvin, Nym swims toward shore clumsily.
Climb check onto shore (1d20)+3 v. DC 10 (roughed ledged wall? I'm not sure what you're considering the shore here to be like. Sandy? Rocky? An embankment? A slope? Eh, here's a DC 10 check.) 13+3, 16
She climbs out of the water onto shore near her friends and stands to face her attackers in the boat. Water streams down her face in little rivulets and her once fine dress clings to her body. Her jaw is set tightly in anger as she turns to look at the men in the rowboat.
Beranhond, seeing the nasty swipe at Talathel, runs over to Talathel. When he arrives he focuses briefly and his hands start glowing blue. Setting them on the elves back, Talathel glows momentarily blue and starts feeling much better:
Nym: Your swim and climb check are good. The embankment is rocky and undercut, and I would give it a DC 15, but you beat that, too, so you were able to get out. Unfortunately, you crawled out beside a bad guy...
Attack of Opportunity as Nym crawls out: The guy standing there with a rapier on the shore swipes at Nym as she crawls out of the water, but misses. Nym, you have an AC higher than 14, right?
Roll(1d20)+4: 10,+4 Total:14
Baddies' Turn: There are only two men left, the man with a rapier stabbing at Talathel, and the man in the water who was attempting to grab Nym. The man with the rapier stabs at Talathel again, determined to take down at least one of his attackers. He hits Talathel again, giving him a long, bloody gash down his left arm. The thug in the water attempts to climb out, but though he gets on the wall, he makes no progress, and draws an attack by both Talathel and Nym. Talathel hits the man's hand, dealing him a small bit of damage. Nym, I don't know your stats, since you haven't attacked yet. Could you please roll for this attack of opportunity before your next turn? Thanks.
If you would add that, it would be great. I can't access the spreadsheet at work, so I just have some of the values memorized/written down. Please add the AoO to the sheet. Thanks.
Targets: up to five creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft. apart
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance yes
A missile of magical energy darts forth from your fingertip and strikes its target, dealing 1d4+1 points of force damage.
The missile strikes unerringly, even if the target is in melee combat, so long as it has less than total cover or total concealment. Specific parts of a creature can't be singled out. Objects are not damaged by the spell.
I'm posting this because it turns out I don't have to roll to hit for magic missile - it hits as long as the people aren't completely concealed. AND since both the baddies are probably within 15 feet of each other, I can hit them BOTH with my attack of opportunity and normal attack! :P
What do you mean you can hit them both with your attack of opportunity? An attack of opportunity is a single melee attack. That means you could use your "Laughing Touch" ability, since it counts as a melee touch attack, but not Magic Missile, which is a spell, for an AoO.
Also, unless you have Combat Reflexes, you only get 1 AoO per round.
Nym dodges easily as the man who had been turning Talathel into sushi chunks swung at her. "HEY!" She exclaims at him, highly annoyed that she just almost drowned and is now having a sword brandished at her. The man turns and slices Talathel some more and Nym laughs as Beranhond slap-heals him.
Just then she sees Mr. Grapples trying to climb out of the water after her. She pretends to polish her nails on her sopping wet dress as she smirks at him before crouching down to stage-whisper to him, "This is for my DRESS!" She stands and kicks Mr. Grapples in the face.
(1d20), 18 Damage: (1d3)-1 3-1 2
Now for my normal attack!
Nym laughs, seeing the surprise in Mr. Grapple's eyes as she prepares a Magic Missile to send at both the men. "And THIS is for ruining the party!"
Magic missile has 1 missile at first, then, when you reach level 3 sorcerer, you get 2 missiles, etc. You can direct these missiles at the same or different people, but you don't get to have multiple missiles yet. Sorry. Only 1 baddy was injured when you did that.
As Nym casts Magic Missile, the man with the rapier next to her swipes at her with his sword, but misses. Because he missed, you don't need to make a concentration check.
As Nym crawls from the water, Gurkirat stops playing his melodious tune and grabs his kama. Running up to the nearest foe, he slashes out aggressively. He struck a hit, but the scratch inflicted was so minuscule his enemy barely noticed. Just as Gurkirat glanced away in frustration there came a spurt of blood from the wound.
Darvin, a little annoyed that his heroic attempt to save Nym didn't go as he had planned, swam over to the shore and pulled himself out. He was going to join the fray one way or another.
Gurkirat has a Kama? Do you mean his dagger of sleep, or do you actually have a Kama as well? That seems like an odd weapon for a Gnomish bard to have.
Darvin: Apparently you are a great swimmer, and are able to climb out. The rapierist has already had an Attack of Opportunity this round, so he won't be able to swipe at you.
Nym watches as Darvin climbs out of the water, happy to see he isn't having the swimming-related problems she had. She smiles at him and laughs, seeing they make quite the hilarious pair of soaked half-elves in their ruined fine clothing.
Baddies: The rapierist stabs at Talathel again, this time missing. The other man is finally able to climb up the embankment, drawing an attack of opportunity from both Talathel and Nym. Could you both please roll for that? It's just an extra attack. Thanks. He draws a club as he gets on the bank.
Beranhond, quite happy that Talathel didn't get himself turned into ground beef, decided to attack Mr. Grapples.

Both of Darvin's attacks landed. The second one just barely, but his cutlass opened up the carotid artery in the man's leg and he bled to death in just a few short seconds.
Darvin then looked at the Rapist, who at this point was surrounded by the adventurers, "Do you have anything to say before we kill you? Or maybe we should let you live? What do you think Beranhond?"
Nym glares at the Rapierist trying very hard to look threatening next to Darvin and Beranhond, but she looks only rather silly as she is a small, wet, half-elf girl with a look on her face that she thought looked threatening but to others looked like her father had grounded her for sassing.
That's totally ok. Although what should I do now ....
Upon noticing that the man wasn't even paying any attention to him, Gurkirat shrugged and caught the eye of Darvin, miming "You wanna drink?" with his hands.
Beranhond rolled his eyes at the man chuckling at this silliness. Up behind him he saw Scriptus and Codex join them, their swords drawn. "We are here to help! Even if we are slightly late..."
Gurkirat: Just because he's ignoring you right now doesn't mean you can't make him pay attention to you. If you had just captured an enemy, and he decided to spit in one guy's face and not pay attention to anybody else, that doesn't mean that everyone else is out of it, just that that one person should probably take point.
Nym looked around hoping the Rapierist was talking to someone else and then looked back at him when she was certain this wasn't the case.
"Right... maybe later..." she says, thinking. Suddenly she looks up at the man, flashing her most winning smile.

Nym: Is it a hero point because you don't know the spell or because you don't have any more spells prepared? Either way, great use of a hero point. I'll post his response soon.

She raised her hands and suddenly a thick fog grew around the boat obscuring sight of and within the boat. If they can't see me, their weapons, or anything really, do they still get an attack of opportunity? Nym laughs when she hears the suprised cries of her captors and jumps into the water over the side of the boat toward shore.

ReplyDeleteBeranhond sure isn't going near the water. I think he sinks.
As Nym sinks into the cold water, all the sounds of the fight are blocked from her senses. She opens her eyes and the salt water stings them for a moment before she becomes used to it. She looks up at the surface and sees the shimmer of the fading light of the day as she sinks.
ReplyDelete~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nym was 11 and on her way with her friend, Morna, a Tiefling wizard, several other students, and the headmistress of the herbology school in Silverymoon through the Evermoors to Nesme to meet an old wizard to learn about herbs to the far North. The sun had fallen beneath the horizon and the sky was the deep blue only seen at dusk. The headmistress was telling the students about the herbs of the Evermoors, but Nym was far more interested in what lay beyond the path in the wild of the moors. She peered away from the fire into the growing night, listening and waiting. The sky grew into the deep velvet black of night and stars appeared. The headmistress sent the students to bed. Nym lay restless in her sleeping sack next to Morna. Finally, well into the night, Nym snuck out of her tent into the moors. Having grown up in the wild of the High Forest, she had no trouble navigating the dangerous soil of the moors. Soon she was out of sight of the group's campfire. She stood listening to the wind in the grass and the strange animals of the moor. Patiently she waited. After a good hour of standing still, scanning the moors, she saw in the distance a faint blue light in the distance. She was filled with the urge to chase after it, to find the being responsible for the light, and to join them. She resisted, and simply watched as the lights came and went in the distance, trying to tempt her further into the moors. As morning approached, the lights disappeared, and Nym returned to the camp.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pale blue light of the surface danced like the lights of the moor all those years before. Only this time touching that light would save rather than doom her. She reached her hand toward the surface and frantically tried to swim to the light.
Nym:
ReplyDeleteYou had a temporary Strength score of 4 from the Beladonna. When you made the save, that was erased, so I cleared that up on your character sheet, leaving you with only a -1 to your swim check.
What this means for you is that you got a 7 on your swim check, so you aren't sinking after all, and are just struggling, not making any progress. :) Would you still like to have the flashback?
He is able to find Nym in the water, and grabs at her, but the slipperyness of the water causes him to lose her. The other brute does as told and steps onto the rowboat, waiting there for the two to surface. The man with the rapier again attacks Talathel, slashing him very effectively on the left thigh. ReplyDeleteSchool evocation [force]; Level sorcerer/wizard 1
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets: up to five creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft. apart
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance yes
A missile of magical energy darts forth from your fingertip and strikes its target, dealing 1d4+1 points of force damage.
The missile strikes unerringly, even if the target is in melee combat, so long as it has less than total cover or total concealment. Specific parts of a creature can't be singled out. Objects are not damaged by the spell.
I'm posting this because it turns out I don't have to roll to hit for magic missile - it hits as long as the people aren't completely concealed. AND since both the baddies are probably within 15 feet of each other, I can hit them BOTH with my attack of opportunity and normal attack! :P
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean you can hit them both with your attack of opportunity? An attack of opportunity is a single melee attack. That means you could use your "Laughing Touch" ability, since it counts as a melee touch attack, but not Magic Missile, which is a spell, for an AoO.
ReplyDeleteAlso, unless you have Combat Reflexes, you only get 1 AoO per round.
