Strange Things on Foot

As Nym and Ollin continue their quest for herbs after finding the bilberries, Nym catches sight of something that grabs her attention. Between two trees, she spies an animal walking very slowly towards a small thicket. It is walking away from them, but appears to be a boar. Something about it catches Nym's attention, though.

  1. Nym looks the boar over, but remains hidden where she is with her father. She knows enough not to anger a boar if she has no interest in being gored.

Do any of these tell me why I find this boar so very fascinating?

  2. Perception works. So does knowledge (nature). The boar is moving very awkwardly and slowly. As it walks a bit closer to the thicket, it falls over and a large dark mark stands out on its side. The boar appears to have very labored breathing and appears to be in very bad health.

  3. Nym gestures to her father that the boar needs help and he silently walks up behind her for a better look.

Nym silently moves through the woods in order to come out in the injured boar's vision to startle him less. As she came toward it, she purposely made a bit of noise so as not to enrage the boar. It looked toward her with pained eyes. She crouched down and talked soothingly as she approached it. Although a bit uneasy, it allowed her to approach. She knelt next to the animal and examined the dark mark on its side.

  4. Upon closer inspection, the dark mark appears to be a wound, only half healed. Oddly, though, green vines have ground out of the wound, and are starting to grow out around some of the boar's fur. Also, its mouth has more green vines growing out of it that seem to come from down its throat. Knowledge: Nature check please?

  5. You have heard about a plant called a yellow musk creeper that infests animals as a means of procreating. This looks like it might be the handiwork of such a plant, but you haven't seen anything like it before.

On voicing your suspicion about the yellow musk creeper, Ollin says "Fuck!" in elvish, under his breath.

On being asked, Ollin tells you that there may be an infestation nearby, and that he needs to try to find it and kill the plant before it kills all of the nearby animals and strangles the plants as well. He would really appreciate the help...

  6. Nym backs off from the infected boar, sad at its fate. She listens to her father, and then nods, agreeing to help. Behind her, the fox up and Vort peer out from some heavy brush, not quite sure if it is safe to approach the boar. Nym gestures to them to back away further from the boar and they both disappear into the underbrush. Nym and Ollin follow the two dogs.

  7. As they get a safe distance away, Ollin asks, "Can you burn the boar? It is a seed, and we need to confine the spread of this vile vine."

  8. Nym opened her mouth to protest, but realized her father was right; the boar had to be destroyed. She nodded, and silently made her way back toward the injured animal.

The boar hadn't made it to the thicket it was moving toward and had collapsed on the forest floor several meters away. It was breathing heavily now, and Nym could see the yellow vine had taken root through the boar from the animal's side touching the earth. It saw Nym as she carefully approached and let out a low, pained groan.

Keeping an eye on the vine, Nym cleared dry brush and other flammable things away from the boar. It watched her carefully. When she was finished clearing away the brush, Nym knelt in front of the boar and gently stroked its nose. "I'm sorry you have to die... The vine is killing you and will kill others if I don't kill you now," she said to it quietly. "I wish you could understand me." The boar watched her and blinked. Nym pulled out the long hunting knife she'd taken out with her in the morning when she and her father had left. The boar watched her calmly as she raised the knife. The boar looked into Nym's eyes, and she plunged the knife into the animal's heart. It gasped and then slouched as it died. "I'm sorry," whispered Nym. The yellow vines coming from the boar's wound continued to wriggle, seeming now to take notice of Nym since its victim was dead.
