Off to school we go

Talathel found himself awake during the pre-dawn hours. Since he meditated, he required much less sleep than his traveling companions. He went out to the stables and checked on the horses. He figured they would have the day off more or less.

He hoped that Nym was in the city, or at least not far from it. He was somewhat eager to get back to the ship, for very much the same reasons why Darvin had dragged him on a three day adventure.

Seeing that the horses were fed, watered, and resting comfortably, Talathel pulled out some bread and fruit from his pack and had himself a sunrise breakfast. He occasionally gave some food to Arandur.

With the meal completed he headed back to the room. Since we didn't specify, I'm going to say we shared a room. He sat in a chair and waited for Darvin and Thjodolf to awaken. Eventually there were signs of life from his two companions.

"If you don't hurry, you'll be late for class today! If you miss school you won't learn your spells and what a dull elf you'll be!"

Thjodolf looked at him strangely.

"My mother used to say that to me before I went to school."

"You no know spells."

"I skipped a few days."

  1. As did the "scientist" who keep sticking is hand in boiling water. He definitely had 2nd degree burns after that...

  2. his not is

I did enjoy the ant igloo, I wish the ants around my house could build such things.

  3. Why would he keep sticking his hand in? No way he got paid enough for that.

  4. In his defense, he tried using a spoon the last time, but dropped it.

  5. Water. Delicious, refreshing, water.

  6. Are you heading down to the school, then? What time of day are you going? Anywhere or anything in particular you want to check out?

  7. I want to go to the school early in the day, so that if we get a lead, we can pursue it that afternoon. I'd want to talk with an administrator or head teacher who had been there awhile and might know Nym from when she attended. Questions I would ask: "Have you seen Nym?", "Where in Silverymoon did she live?", "Does she still have family here?", "Any old acquaintances or places she'd likely visit?"

  8. I'd like a perception roll from both Darvin and Talathel. Thanks.

  10. As you arrive at the Lady's College, you see several large statues, one of which especially catches your eye. It has 6 young people in various states of study or thought. There is a male elf, a male and a female human who look to be in their mid to late teens, and a male and a female tiefling, who look to be in their early to mid teens. Lastly, there is a young half-elf who looks surprisingly like Nym.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Talathel turns to Darvin, "Would you like a minute? You can hug that statue, look longingly into its eyes. You know, for practice."

Before Darvin can respond, Talathel continues towards the front door of the Lady's College.

    ReplyDelete
  12. "Oh bugger off!" Darvin says to Talathel as he walks away. "This is very interesting though. It looks as though Nym is somewhat of a celebrity around here." Darvin follows Talathel into the school to seek out the headmaster.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Never being one to realize where lines are, Talathel continues. "She looks good in that statue. Very life like. Given how absent-minded she seems to be about you two, that statue may be your best bet!"

He stops at the front door, places his hand on the door and gives it a push.

  14. As Talathel opened the doors to the largest building of the Lady's College, he stepped into a large open area that was lined with an assortment of different objects, some obviously magical, others seeming much more mundane. There were bookcases filled with what appeared to be small jewelry boxes, a tall pedestal holding a jar with what looked like a glowing, severed halfling hand with sharp claws and scales starting towards the wrist, and a small pile of hats, about 2/3rds of which gave off light of varying colors, patterns and brightnesses.

The room itself was rather triangular, though its walls were not straight, but rather curvy, and there was a hallway straight across from the door they had entered through.

The doors all looked rather thick and stout, with two handles, one at human or elf height and one at halfling or gnome height. Each had what appeared to be two peepholes with a small flaps over them, as well. There was one door immediately to their right, one on the right-hand wall close to where the hallway left the room, and one about 15 feet down the wall to their left. The room was rather silent, though they could hear a person walking down the hallway beyond.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Talathel looks at Darvin to gauge his reactions. "I feel we should wait for whoever that is to come here. When the entry piece is a hand, I don't feel like poking around much."

    ReplyDelete
  16. "I didn't come all this way just to wait. I'm knocking." Darvin walked up to the human sized door and gave it three big knocks.

    ReplyDelete
  17. There are three doors in the room, all human height. Which of them are you knocking on? The closest one, immediately to your right?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Talathel simply rolls his eyes. "I suppose knocking is better than just barging through one of the doors, like I half expected you to do."

    ReplyDelete
  19. Are those footsteps coming towards us? Would we be able to see whomever is making them soon?

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's difficult to tell whether they are coming toward you or not, but if you walk about 5 feet to your right, you can have a look down the hall.

    ReplyDelete
  21. After about 30 seconds of waiting, the door opened, and a small child peered out through the doorway. She had the slightly pointed ears of a half-elf, and over her, Talathel and Darvin could see a room full of children peeking eagerly through the doorway.

The child said, "Miss Pollivar says if you it's not urgent, you should wait the 5 minutes until class is over." She studied Darvin and Talathel's faces very curiously, obviously waiting for a response.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Darvin was surprised that this tiny child had opened the door. Totally not what he had expected. "Um...ok, we'll wait here then," Darvin said to the girl and then shrugged at Talathel.

    ReplyDelete
  23. While they wait, Darvin hears a familiar voice that says, "So ye like em small, eh?" The ring then begins laughing uproariously at his own joke. "Likes 'em small! Ha!"

    ReplyDelete
  24. As Darvin and Talathel wait in the hallway, the ring still guffawing infrequently at his own poor joke, the footsteps stop, a door opens, and the footsteps fade as the door closes again. After about 4 minutes of waiting, the door to the left opens and young teenagers erupt from the doors. Shortly after, the room they had just knocked at emitted forth its crowd of burbling 7-10 year olds. Finally, the door farther along the right wall issued a group of late teenagers. All told, just under 50 people now filled the hallway. Some chatted in small circles, some left through the doorway, and others headed down the hallway at the far end of the room. Of those that went down the hallway, roughly 2/3rds of them searched around in the pile of hats and put one on before walking down the hallway.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I didn't get a chance to respond, but would it be possible for Talathel to go look down the hallway and see who was making the footsteps in those five minutes?

Talathel also requests that the ring, which he can't hear, tell Darvin that, for his sake, he hopes Nym likes 'em small too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The person walking down the hall appears to be a middle aged bald man. He walks to a door at the end of the hallway, does an odd shuffle step with a flourish of his hand, and then opens the door and enters.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "Excuse me, sir! Do you have a moment? I'm looking for the headmaster of this school. I've traveled a great distance and its quite important."

  28. The man looked up briefly before giving a wink and scuffling off into the room, otherwise completely ignoring the entreaty.

    ReplyDelete
  29. (I'm assuming that the five minutes have not yet passed)

Talathel quickly walks down the hallway, not wanting to chase after the man. It is, afterall, a wizards school.

"Please sir, our friend has gone missing. A girl by the name of Nym, she attended her, didn't she?"

    ReplyDelete
  30. There is no response from the closed door, and as Talathel gets to where the man exited the hallway, he sees a sign on the door indicating it is a girls' bathroom.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Talathel turns around and heads back down the hall, and as per trip protocol, takes a quick pull from his flask.

"Getting near empty...going to need to fill it back up."

He rounds the corner, seeing Darvin blankly staring at him.

"Don't judge. You didn't just have a rude and balding wizard avoid you by going into the women's bathroom. Besides, its nearly noon."

    ReplyDelete
  32. Talathel, it happens to the best of us. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Darvin walks into the room he knocked on looking for a teacher/headmaster type.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The only person remaining in the room is a gnome woman with purple hair, who is gesturing to erase letters and shapes written in the air at the front of the classroom. She appears to be middle-aged, and is wearing a smock that is covered with pockets of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

    ReplyDelete
  35. "Um, yes, Hello. We wondering if you could maybe help us find our friend Nym. She seems to have been heading here and wanted to know if you have seen her." Darvin asked the gnome teacher and then shrugged at Talathel.

  36. The woman turned to Darvin with a peeved look on her face. "Do you mean to tell me that you interrupted my class of 1st Levels to try to find someone? Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep them focused for a full class? Well, do you?" The woman seemed rather frazzled. "Alright, as punishment for interrupting my class, you must each write 'It is rude to interrupt my elders' 50 times on those magical scrolls in the stack there. After you have done that, I will answer your question."

With this, she turned back to her work. Before Darvin or Talathel could interrupt her, she said, "Now get to it!"

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Are you serious?" Darvin asked, knowing full well that she was. Darvin had absolutely no desire in writing anything 50 times, especially when it was an innocent mistake. "We are sorry. We did not know that this was a classroom. I was hoping to find the headmaster. I do apologize."

    ReplyDelete
  39. "For apologizing, I will reduce your punishment to 25 times. Start now, before I get angry and double it!" The woman said. She appeared to still be treating Darvin and Talathel as if they were 8 years old themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Um, Miss Polivar is it? My companions and I would appreciate it if you would talk to us like we are 8 years old. We do apologize for disrupting your class but we're really just looking for the headmaster, could you please point us in the right direction?"

  41. Darvin, you can only use Diplomacy like that once per day to make a person like you more. You may use it to gather information multiple times, but at the moment, she has basically refused to give you information until you start writing.

In a huff, Miss Polivar turned to Darvin and Talathel. "If you won't do as you are told, then you will be made too!" With this, she began gesturing at Darvin and speaking in Draconic, which Darvin and Talathel had by now come to realize meant she was trying to cast a spell.

Before they could do anything to stop her, she had finished, and in a very sweet and gentle voice asked Darvin, "Now, please just write me 25 sentences. That's not too much to ask, now is it?"
    Darvin: Will save, please?

As she began casting, a male gnome with white hair that was well combed back except for one small bunch on the right side that stuck straight up. "Abigail!" he shouted, interrupting her spell, "Let them go see the Headmistress. I know they interrupted your class, but they didn't know any better. Just let them be."

    ReplyDelete
  42. Talathel looks at Darvin. "You should really thank that gnome. I know you're frustrated, but don't dig yourself a further hole."

He turns to the two wizards and addresses the gnome. "Thank you. I'm afraid it has been awhile since either one of us have been to school. Again, our apologies for the intrusion, but we're trying to find our friend. We think someone at the school may be able to help, and judging by the statues outside, our guesses aren't to far off."

And by the way Dan, the last time I did a diplomacy roll was Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's game days, Nick. Not real days. In the game, the last time you did a diplomacy roll was 5 minutes ago.

Darvin nods, walks over, and begins writing sentences without another word.

  45. I just noticed that I contradicted myself, saying that she finished and that she was interrupted. Sorry about that. Well, I will do a concentration check for her, with a DC 10. Here are the results:

She passed, so the spell was complete. Sorry for the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  46. "Abigail, release him this instant! He's not one of your students, and you have no right to force him to submit to your punishments!" The gnome said, obviously frustrated. When she didn't respond, he said, "I will report you to the headmistress if you don't let up."

Finally, at this threat, she gestured, and Darvin stopped writing, looking a bit confused as to why he had suddenly obeyed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Now then, Abigail, I will lead them to the Headmistress. We'll talk later about this use of magic on visitor's to the college." With that, the man turned around and walked out the door.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Darvin looked at Talathel and said, "That was weird. It was like I wasn't even thinking." Turning to the gnome Darvin introduces them, "Thank you for your help. I am Darvin and this is Talathel and Thjodolf."

    ReplyDelete
  49. "I thought you'd be used to that by now," Talathel mused aloud. He followed the two wizards out the door.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Only wizard left. Abigail is still in the room.

    ReplyDelete
  51. After Darvin caught up and introduced himself, the gnome stopped his walking and turned to the both of them. "I am Ezekiel Sonomoliam Zedronoss. I am please to make your acquaintance. I teach some of the more advanced classes, and specialize in illusion. What are your callings?"

    ReplyDelete
  52. The ring chose to pipe up again. "Wizards of illusion can be very hazardous for them as has weak wills. Condsider yerself warned."

    ReplyDelete
  53. "Well, Ezekiel, I am a Monk of the Old Order. I am traveling with Darvin here in order to spread the message of Koldael."

    ReplyDelete
  54. "Thanks Captain." Darvin said to the ring. Turning back to Ezekiel, Darvin responded to Talathel's last comment, "Yeah, but he mostly just gets drunk and screws. Anyway, we're looking for the Headmistress for some information on our friend who we think may be coming here. Can you please point us in the right direction?"

    ReplyDelete
  55. "We're here mainly because you want to do the latter," Talathel said under his breath.
