Days 7-12 of the Trip South

Sorry I forgot to post on Friday. :( I'll post double the days at once to make up for it. Also, I was still waiting on Darvin to post. Come on, Nick. Get it together, man!

As you continue the journey south, the days begin to blur together a bit. Days 7 and 8 pass uneventfully, but on day 9, you come across a man clinging to a small raft, who tells you of a pirate treasure buried on an island nearby. The man insists that he just helped bury it, and only just escaped with his life. If you help him get it, he will share the treasure with you, and it should only take an extra day or two on your journey. Darvin and Nym, how do you want to handle this one? You may open it up for the group to discuss, but either the ship's captain or owner should decide how to proceed. You have foodstores for another 5 days at the moment.

On day 10, the wind dies down a bit, and the crew try foraging on the shore for food and water. Everyone, please give me a Survival check.

On day 11, Beranhond discovers that his shield, the holy icon he uses for calling upon Narath's help,  is missing from his room. Distressed, he asks the other members of Kilink, but they have not seen it either. How would you like to begin your search beyond that, Beranhond?

On day 12, Just before sunrise, Helga rushes above deck to report a leak has sprung. Talathel, being the only member of Kilink on deck, is the only one there to receive the report. Most of the crew is still asleep, though there is a bell on board to wake them. Helga tells you the leak is not too serious yet, but she worries that the leak sprung from a warped board in the hull and is concerned that if it warped enough to spring a leak, it could mean more problems down the road if not fixed properly. How do you want to handle the situation, Talathel?

  1. Well, he will ask the crew and then the new person on board if they have seen a shield lying around. If not there then he will search the cargo hold before checking his room again.

  2. After a bit of asking around, one of the new passengers steps forward and tells you that he has your shield. He asks that you follow him, and he brings you down to the hold, where he has a small work area set up, and your shield is sitting out. He shows it to you, afraid to get in your way as you go to investigate it.

Please give me a detect magic (either spellcraft or knowledge (arcane)) check and a perception check.

  3. After making sure the man on the raft is taken care of, Nym asks Darvin what he thinks of this pirate treasure tale.

"I'm worried this might be a trap... but it would be fun either way." Nym smiled mischievously. "I leave the decision up to you!" Nym hopped away before Darvin could protest.

Talathel uses his Hero Point to magically fix the drain. Using magic. No, not really.

Talathel follows Helga to the leak. Sure enough, there's a small amount of water coming into the boat. The elf, having little experience on a boat before was not quit sure what to do.

"We must be careful to not damage the wood any further. Helga, do we have any clay or anything that we can use to seal the hole until we can get to port? We're still a few days from our destination, but maybe if we can at least slow the look, we can get there without any other concerns. Let me know if you find something to use. I may also ask Lailsan if she could make a substance that could serve that purpose. I will report this to Captain Darvin, and take it from there."

Talathel realized that was the first time he referred to the half-elf as "Captain Darvin."

  5. As Talathel tells Helga what she should do, the board warp further apart, and water starts spraying through the hole much faster, now about a gallon a second.

  6. Nym and Beranhond, please give me your survival checks.

  7. "Oh shit." Talathel says. He looks frantically about the room, trying to find something that might stop the gap.

Choose your own adventure time, as I must do other things! If Talathel finds something useful, have him use it. I'm supposing he may be looking for something he can secure over the hole, such as some boards, maybe some rocks (do we have ballast?) at least a temporary fix. Once its in place, he tells Helga to keep guard while he gets Darvin. If he does not find anything, he goes and wakes Darvin up, and with his prior experience on a boat, he may be able to help.

  10. As you pick up your shield, you notice that Darvin's cutlasses and Talathel's kama there as well. Your examination of the shield shows you that it now has several new features, including a +2 bonus and a minor spell resistance (DC13) bonus.

The man looks at Beranhond sheepishly and says, "I wanted to pay you back for granting me passage. If it does not please you, I could provide you with alternate magical protection. I was only hoping to do my part. Please forgive me for my boldness!" As he says this last part, he falls on his knees at Beranhond's feet, and grovels.

  11. Beranhond looks confused for a second before helping the man to his feet.
"All boldness is forgiven, but please, never grovel near me!" Beranhond then picks up the shield. "You certainly do excellent work and have, in my mind, paid your passage a thousand times over."

  12. Talathel finds a sack full of grain that he shoves against the wall, where the leak sprang, and tells Helga to hold it there while he runs and gets others. Shortly after, Nym, Darvin, Beranhond, Talathel, and Thjodolf come running back down. The water is still spurting out under the sack of grain, and a large puddle is forming in the bottom of the ship.

  13. Back with Beranhond on day 11.

The man gives a hesitant smile to Beranhond as he is pulled up from the ground. "Thank you milord. W-w-w-would you be w-w-willing to give Captain Darvin and sir Talathel their weapons back as well? Oh, and I prepared this for milady Nym, as well. He searches behind a barrel and finds a conical hat, in purple and green, with a hanging tassel that glows a vivid hunter green. The light is dim, and dimly illuminates an area 15 feet around it.

Beranhond's shield now has a light emanating from it as well. It is a medium white light, and luminates an area 30' in front of the shield.

    Man on Raft:
Darvin watches Nym skip off and is a little flumoxed by her reaction. "Sir, we do not have time to go searching for this treasure, but we will grant you passage if you wish." Darvin says to the floating man.

    Leak in Hold:
As Darvin rushes below deck he can hear the water running into the ship. "Shit!" he says as he sees the leak for the first time. Poor Helga is holding at best she could but the pressure of the sea is going to get the best of her eventually. "We need anything we can find that's sticky and water tight! I'm sure the people who owned this ship before had resin of some kind. Thjodolf go get me a length of rope, the rest of you find me that sealant!"

  15. Beranhond, seeing the warped boards, lifts his shield and casts "make whole" in the hopes that it would seal, if only temporarily, the leak.

  16. Darvin is able to find a barrel full of pitch, as well as some paint brushes and such in the hold, but is unsure how to apply them with so much water coming through.

Beranhond's casting of make whole makes the wood look slightly less stressed, but does not stop the leak.

For more info on leaks of this sort, please give me a Profession: Sailor check.

  17. Nym follows the others into the hold where the leak is growing worse. After a moment watching the others, Nym spins around and heads to the deck. Nym collects Kaitlina and a couple other crew members to help her. She sends one person to find a spare sail while the other two help tie Nym to a length of rope. She explains that placing the sail over the leak underwater should slow the leak enough to help with repairs. With that, she makes sure her rope is secure and the three crew members have a good hold of the rope before jumping in the water to search for the hole from the outside.

  18. Beranhond, seeing that he would only be getting in the way down in the hold leaves the hold and goes up to the main deck to see if he can do anything helpful there.

  19. We are still in the midst of trying to fix the leak in the ship, so I'm not posting the next days until that is taken care of.

Nym, are you aiming for a visual inspection, or are you going to try touching the wood, or what?

Beranhond, please give me a wisdom check.

Darvin and Talathel, what are you two up to?

  21. Beranhond thinks for a second, and realizes it will be very difficult to patch the whole from the inside with water gushing in like it is. Nym has the right idea, to patch it from the outside, and he goes to try to help her with with the sail.

He also realizes that without any sort of collision, there is no reason for the leak to have grown so quickly, and decides he needs to look into it once they get it patched up.

Nym is able, with Beranhond and Kailina's help, to cover the leak with a section of sail, and Darvin is able to use a bit of extra wood to fully stop the leak and then cover it with pitch. The crew work together to bail out the hold, and the repair is good enough that they decide to continue their journey and work on more repairs at the Shaar.

  22. The crew has great luck in their foraging efforts. Beranhond and Talathel find a large herd of aurochs that had been drawn to a stream near the shore, and are able to bring one down to provide some red meat for the crew. Nym finds a bunch of kiwifruit vines, and collects the berries for the crew. Darvin goes out and attempts to lead a party in search of water. He is unable to find any, after getting lost for most of the day, but he meets up with Beranhond and Talathel, who show him the stream they found, and all is not lost.

  23. You had food for 2 more days, and the food you've just collected will last you another 7, so you will be good for 9 days. (The rest of your journey. Also, kiwi has lots of vitamin c, so you can escape scurvy.
