A Fighting We Will Go

Darvin had hardly heard what Thjodolf had said to him. He was preoccupied with thinking about the fight. While, on the one hand, fighting without weapons mostly eliminated the chance he would perish, he was wondering how he was going to take down the large orc woman otherwise.

"Oh, I am sorry Thjodolf. You are very welcome, my friend. I know you would have done the same for me. And yes, I was thinking about the fight. I've never fought an orc in hand to hand combat before. Any advice?"

Darvin listend as Thjodolf explained some of the nuances of orcish combat. It sounded like they mostly tried to overpower the smaller and weaker opponents. Darvin decided then that it would be best to keep moving the entire time. After the lesson Darvin decided he was as ready as he would ever be and it was time to fight.

"Young Paz! Please lead the way to the combat arena."

  1. Here follows my attempts to tie Darvin's post in with what was happening with everyone else.

Thjodolf, being a good friend, prepared Darvin as best he could for what he thought was going to happen. As he told Darvin, he had only been in 1 orc fight before, and he was unsure exactly what was normal. He told Darvin about the big bruiser that had fought him and how he had just tried rushing Thjodolf to knock him down and then stomp on him while he was on the ground. After exhausting the few bits of advice he had, mostly about keeping alert and moving around, he was unsure what to say. He hung out and showed Darvin a demonstration of the overrun technique that was used on him, and then when everyone else started heading to dinner, he wished Darvin good luck, and went to eat with them. Darvin, not wanting to fight on a full stomach, went without dinner, choosing instead to pace around the tent until he decided the time was right.

Marching out into the community area, where people were gathered and eating around small cooking fires, Darvin announced himself by brazenly yelling for Paz, "Young Paz! Please lead the way to the combat arena."

Paz jumped up from where he was sitting, and politely asked Darvin if he could just wait a little longer. He had been just about to explain some of the more subtle points of the "immense consonant joust of the 2nd age" when Darvin had called. Darvin was not to be put off, though, and Paz found himself leading Darvin to the fenced off fighting area.

It was a circular area, roughly 20 ft across, with a gate on one side, and was obviously used for fights between many types of creatures. The dirt had been churned quite a lot, and if it was wet, could easily become a slippery morasse. Being dry currently, the dirt looked like it could kick up a good amount of dust. Darvin jumped over the fence and stood in the arena, getting used to the area.

After a while, the area began to fill with those who had just finished eating. A spot was reserved for the members of Kilink, though Darvin only saw Talathel, Nym and Beranhond long enough for them to wave encouragement, before the leader stepped up and said in a booming voice, "So it begins! Khurshid, where are you?"

Khurshid stepped up from somewhere in the outskirts of the circle, wearing scale mail, and many orc voices began chanting, in a very guttural, booming voice, "Aaaaa-wooooo! OOoooo-Aaaaahhh!" over and over again as she walked to the pen.

She jumped over the fence easily, and walked to the other side of the pen from Darvin.

The leader boomed again, "May whatever gods you worship or ignore make you victorious. Fight!"

The roar from the crowd was incredible, as they went berzerk and pounded their chests and legs as drums, eager for blood to be spilt.

  2. As the fight began, Paz motioned to Beranhond, and they left the scene. Darvin was too focused to notice. Talathel thought it was odd that they were leaving their comrade just as he was about to get in a fist fight with one of the biggest orc women he'd ever seen.

  3. Nym excused herself as well, slipping away to find the tent where she had seen Illuvain earlier. She finds the tent without a problem, and notices a large red feather on the pole at the top of the tent she hadn't noticed earlier, a common sign declaring this tent to be a sanctuary from attacks and persecution.

The tent flap is closed as Nym approaches, but much more light is spilling out under the flap from a fire or torch that was not there earlier.

  4. Darvin sized up the large orc woman standing across from him. He remembered what Thjodolf had said to him about keeping his feet moving and then he went on the offensive...

    Attack #1:
    Roll(1d20)+9:
    2,+9
    Total:11
    Miss

Darvin takes a swing at Khursid but she manages to dodge the blow. Undeterred, Darvin presses on...

    Attack #2:
    Roll(1d20)+4:
    3,+4
    Total:7
    Miss

    And he misses again.

"She moves better than I thought," Darvin said to himself.

  5. Khurshid smiles broadly as she dodges Darvin's punches. Darvin, watching her eyes and fists, was completely unprepared for the kick that found his ribs. He didn't even see it until it was far too late to dodge.

    Attack 1: Roll(1d20)+10:
    12,+10
    Total:22

    Damage: Roll(1d3)+6:
    1,+6
    Total:7

Darvin stepped back a couple steps after the heavy blow, shook himself a bit, and prepared for her next onslaught. Being better prepared this time, he was able to dodge and deflect all of her punches and kicks.

    Attack: Roll(1d20)+10:
    1,+10
    Total:11

  6. I forgot to change the modifier on the second attack. It missed anyway, though, so it doesn't really matter.
