The road back...

Nym, Darvin, Violet, and Grumbleshanks decided to leave for the Lady Narath that evening. While packing up the meager remnants of their supplies they found two amulets wrapped around a note.

Darvin and Nym:
I finished these up while on the road. They only offer one healing a day, but it should provide some assistance.
Beranhond

They road out later that evening. Nym rode out on Nesme, Darvin and Violet on random horses they were able to acquire. Grumbleshanks trotted along on a donkey he named "Buggles."

They traveled for several days and nights without incident. They camped each night and Grumbleshanks, turned out to share the halfling love of food and was, though not at first, willing to share his food and ale.

On the fourth day they came to a small village late in the evening.
"I have had enough of camping out, I suggest we try the inn for the night..." Grumbleshanks mumbled sleepily. "Any objections?"

  1. "I might be interested in staying in an inn." Violet looks at the village, attempting to discover how many places have lights in the windows, whether there are many craftspeople, the general upkeep of the village, and if there are any signs of trouble, such as youth spoiling for a fight or signs of angry villagers, etc. If she doesn't see anything suspicious, she'll agree.

Dang it! I roll 1's way too often, and those 20's better come around in a big way when I need them!

  2. The village doesn't appear to be anything special. It is on the smaller side, but has an inn/tavern, a small blacksmith shop, a cooper, and a medium sized temple. A few people are still milling about, and the tavern seems to be putting on a small but brisk business. Violet not noticing anything suspicious leads them on into the center of the village where she notices that a large obelisk sits at the main crossroad.

  3. Darvin thought that staying at an inn sounded like a good idea to him. He he had slept on the ground for far too long and before that a ship. It had been a long time since a real bed. He was thinking about how nice a bed would be, especially if shared with Nym, when the group walked up onto this obelisk, "What the hell is that?" Darvin asked to no one in particular.

  4. Violet investigates the obelisk as well, casting Detect Magic and wracking her brain to think of everything she had ever learned about obelisks that might relate to this one.

  5. The obelisk is a mixture of black, dark blues, and flakes of copper. It stands about twice as tall as any near by building. As Darvin looks closer he sees that the obelisk is covered in numerous carvings of people doing various tasks. However, it is too worn down to make out any specifics. Meanwhile, try as she might, Violet cannot sense any magic about the obelisk.

  6. "It looks like a DM plot device," replied Nym to Darvin's question.

  7. oh yes! :) Because everything I include is useful and plot oriented. For example, giant boreholes that hobbits can help but climb down...

  8. correction: can't help but climb down

  10. As Nym examines the obelisk she notices that the figures run all the way from the top to the bottom. There appear to be various animals in some of the carvings, though it is impossible to make out what kind they once were.
Grumbleshanks doesn't bother examining the obelisk, but instead continues to sit on his donkey.
"Interesting obelisk, isn't it?" A woman's voice says from behind. "Scholars often come by to look at it, but us village folk usually stroll past it without noticing it anymore."

  11. "It is," replied Nym as she turned to smile at the women, "but what is it?"

    ReplyDelete
  12. "We aren't sure. It was here when the village was founded by my grandfather."

    ReplyDelete
  13. Violet asked the woman, "You're grandfather founded the village? Did he found it here because of the obelisk?"

  14. The woman turned to look in Violet's direction, and it appeared to Violet that her eyes lingered on Darvin for a moment. "When I was a little girl he told me that he had been running from trouble in the north. He came to the obelisk in the middle of the night, wounded, hurt, and close to dying. But when he woke in the morning he was all healed. Naturally, in way of thanks he felt obligated to stay and make sure the obelisk was never lonely."
She laughed lightly, "but, I suspect that is the exagerated tale meant to amuse your favorite grandchild. My parents told me that the real story is much less interesting."

  15. Violet smiled at the woman. "Your grandfather sounds like a good man. What was his name? Do you know where he came from?" Violet also examines the woman, noting age, signs of her profession, and indications of social status.

You'll probably want a diplomacy check to see how well we can get info from her... I THINK my diplomacy skill is something like +7... Same with Sense Motive...

  16. Nym cleared her throat and frowned at the woman when she looked Darvin up and down to indicate he wasn't available. Bored and annoyed with the woman, Nym leaned over to Darvin and whispered, "Want to go find the inn?" and smiled innocently.

  17. She laughed again. "My grandfather was a originally a pirate. I guess he didn't start off life the best. He had a ship that used to be a scourge of the sea. He used to tell many tales about that... but perhaps I can tell you that later? I expect that you aren't planning to continue traveling tonight. The road ahead is not the safest or most comfortable."

The woman appears to be in her early twenties. She has large brown eyes, and her dark brown hair is bound in a long brade that hangs down to the middle of her back. She seems to be fairly high in standing as her calf-length dress is simple, but well made and quite clean. Her legs and shoes are clean of dirt, and her hands do not seem to bear many calluses that would point to sewing or field work.

  18. "Your grandfather sounds better and better. Did his 'trouble' in the north have something to do with taking too much booty?" Violet gave an exaggerated wink to the women at this.

"We would be happy to stay for the night. I'm looking forward to laying somewhere cozy tonight. Is there somewhere you would recommend?"

    ReplyDelete
  19. The woman smiled again. "I am sure taking too much booty was just one of the things he was known for. The inn is rather overpriced, but you could stay in the guest quarters in my house if you like. They have become so infrequently used in the last year. It seems like there are fewer and fewer guests every year."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sensing an opportunity, Violet continued the friendly exchange. "I've been known to capture some treasures myself, actually." Violet winked at the woman again, something she seemed to be doing a lot, to Nym and Darvin. "Before I avail myself of your guest quarters, we should be properly introduced. You may call me Violet. What is your name?"

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, Dan, it looks like posting from one's phone doesn't work. So, that is another thing in which you were wrong about... :-D

Darvin was only half paying attention to Nym, especially after hearing the word pirate, but as soon as he heard her question he immediately perked up. "Yes, I think that would be a good idea." He whispered back.

    ReplyDelete
  22. "Lanarra Blackbeard... and don't laugh at my name please..."

    ReplyDelete
  23. She blushed after admiting her names. "It is my grandfather's old pirate name - he adopted it as our family name. Sadly, given how little chance I have had to go sailing it seems oddly ironic." She picked up a large basket at her feet. "Perhaps you would all join me for dinner and I can share some pirate stories and you can tell me about your adventures?"

    ReplyDelete
  24. That sucks, Nick. Sorry to hear it. Give me more details about how it doesn't work, please, so I can attempt to fix it. Thanks!

Violet watched Lanarra blush with increasing interest. This woman's sense of propriety and seeming innocence coming from a line that included at least one ruffian was very appealing to her. Turning to her companions, she asked, "Will you be joining us for a long evening of conversation and chicanery, or will you be finding a place at the inn?"

This is her attempt to convince Grumbleshanks to head to the inn instead of Lanarra's guest rooms. I believe she can probably guess at this point that Nym and Darvin are probably going to head to the inn, seeing them whispering to each other, so this isn't focused on them.

  25. Grumbleplanks looked from one Violet to Darvin and then to Nym. He then repeated the process.
"You people are disgusting. I am going to go camp out on the edge of town."

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nym watched Grumbleshaks leave without the least bit of regret at his leaving. She waited until he was just out of earshot before whispering, "We're disgusting? None of us are covered in squid squirt..." She giggled at how gross the halfling was before grabbing Darvin's hand and leading him away.

  27. Darvin and Nym bid their goodbyes to Violet and Lannara and made their way to the inn.
