Generally, ships traveling up the river to Baldur's Gate enter through a portcullis in the outer wall, which blocks off the river and blocks all travel except for those that pass through the city. This is a wonderful arrangement for the city's merchants, and there are no settlements upriver who are disrupted by this arrangement. However, as Darvin and Talathel approach the city, they notice that their ship will not be able to enter via the normal gate in the walls. The portcullis has fallen over, but so has the wall it was attached to, creating a very treacherous area in the river with large stones jutting up at odd angles throughout for 20 or 30 feet of the river before they become submerged, at least, if not absent. The stones look very solid, and will almost certainly damage their ship should they attempt to cross this stretch of the river.
There is some space to land the ship on the western shore of the river, just north of the Outsiders' Market.Your ship is not the first to make use of this improvised dock, and it appears some of the more industrious denizens have begun constructing a temporary pier in the area.
