A Squelchy Bed

Grumbleshanks spent a long night tossing and turning, and ducking and weaving in and out of sleep as if the two were playing a rough game of tag. He dreamt of laughing gods cheerfully slopping wine over themselves. Nightmares of churning water and massive waves swept him from the ocean bottom and flung him helplessly onto lifeless beaches. At one point thought he heard and felt the presence of another, but couldn't tell if he was awake or asleep. Next, he dreamt of a mighty squid entangling and strangling him, Squiggles, and a strange gnome.

Finally, day broke. Grumbleshanks began to stretch, but quickly pulled back, then ceased all movement. "Ugh," he groaned.

Perception roll: 2+8=10

Slowly, stiffly, and very unsilently, the halfling rose to his feet to curse the light of day that disrupted the tumultuous rest he quickly began bemoaning. Nearby, totally unbeknownest to Grumbleshanks lie a small figure curled in blissful sleep looking all the world as content as a kitten curled in mama's lap.

Looking down, Grumbleshanks immediately gasped. He had fallen asleep on the corpse of a jellyfish. He quickly examined the exposed parts of his body. Somehow, despite his rolling and heaving, he escaped unscathed. He noticed several tentacles were tossed aside, and a memory of a vengeful squid came to mind. "Phew," he sighed and pulled out a cold and salty breakfast from his pack. "Mmmm. Salted dolphin and dried kelp."

After licking his fingers, Grumbleshanks massaged his aching limbs, wishing Squiggles were around to do it for him. His thoughts linked with Squiggles. Another sigh escaped, as he found Squiggles was alright. He told the octopus to meet him up river at the bridge. Then, he packed his few possessions and turned towards to highway.

His eyes immediately narrowed on a sleeping figure; instictively, crouched and ready his spear. Searching the gnome for any signs of danger, Grumbleshanks found none. Considering shuffling around gnome, he noticed a flute, and the traveler's apparel. "I'm alone only with my possessions right now. Although Squiggles is playful, he a bit of the silent type. This gnome, a kindred Normal Size, is a musician. They're a special sort, always good company, and bound to be clever. However, walking alone with my possessions is better than walking alone without my possessions which is better still than dieing alone with or without my possessions. The Admiral did say we'd run into company of all sorts and to accept friends when possible. Here goes!

Nervously, Grumbleshanks crept closer and proded the sleeping figure with the point of his spear.

  1. Was that a self-imposed perception check to see if you noticed Gurkirat lying there? If so, nice use of the skill. Well done.

As a note, I like what you did with the perception check, using its results initially, and then kind of ignoring them and spotting the gnome anyway. My policy for these types of things will be that unless it drastically affects the storyline or another character, I will not require you to make checks that relate to your interactions with other characters, though you can choose to use the checks as a way to add a bit of chance to your encounters.

For instance, I won't require you to roll diplomacy when you are trying to recruit another PC to your team, and won't require perception checks unless the PC is trying to sneak past you. :)

    Okay, enough rules. :D
