Maybe This Was A Bad Idea...

As soon as Beranhond went into the other room Darvin started having second thoughts. Should I really have put a cleric in charge of hiring the crew? The man doesn't even drink, well, he says he doesn't but we all witnessed that. But really, they'll probably all be pious, boring people. They probably don't even fornicate... Darvin sighed as he realized what he had just gotten himself into. He was waiting for Beranhond to finish interviewing the crew when he spotted Thjodolf hanging around the courtroom.
Darvin excitedly walked over to him, "Hello friend! I am happy to see you are well."

Thjodolf extended his hand to Darvin and almost crushed it with his grip. "It very good you no rot in dungeons of city."

"Yes, that is indeed true." Darvin and Thjodolf talked for quite some time about the adventures they had had together and each other's past. It was during this time that Thjodolf revealed that before he came to Baldur's Gate he had extensive experience with cannons.

"How fortunate! Beranhond seems to not relish his Sergeant at Arms duties and would prefer to be the surgeon. So, we could use a man of your experience and expertise. Are you interested in being the Lady Narath's Sergeant at Arms?"

Thjodolf thought about this for a minute and then gave Darvin a huge  bear hug that forced the breath out of him, "I accept! Me go get stuff and see you at ship." And with that the half-orc happily bounded off to collect his belongings.

At about this time Beranhond emerged from the room.

"It appears you no longer have to be Sergeant at Arms. Thjodolf is quite proficient in the art of cannons." Darvin announced to the Cleric, who looked quite revealed upon hearing this. "How does our crew look?" Darvin asked, but he was dreading the answer.

  1. I accept this addition to Thjodolf's background, with the slight change that he is not "extensively" experienced in them. I will adjust his stats accordingly, but I will not allow him to overbalance the crew.

  2. Talathel looks about the ship.

"Am I the only person without a job?"

  3. What do you mean overbalance the crew? If you mean you don't want him to keep us from sucking then I hate you.

  4. It would be unfair for you to have an NPC that overshadowed all of your abilities and made your crew amazing all by himself. Similar to how I would not suddenly have an NPC privateer come and captain your ship, taking away the experience for all of you.

If you want to get something in the game, you need to work for it. It won't suddenly show up in the form of you changing the backstory of someone because you suddenly found another use for them and so they suddenly have a great deal more abilities. If you wanted an amazing cannon-expert on the ship, then I would ask you to go and search the area and pay him for his services. As is, I'm giving you an NPC for free that will be knowledgeable about the use of your swivel guns, but won't be so amazing that you'll only need him to do it all for you.

Talathel works his way up the riggings to the crow's nest. After climbing inside, he looks out into the sea, not sure what he is hoping to see. Nevertheless, he's disappointed when all he sees are waves.

"Hey Darvin! Whose manning the crow's nest?"

  6. As Darvin walks onto the ship he watches Talathel. And when his friend calls down to him he answers back, "After that display I believe you are my friend!"
