Trial and Tribblations

As the day wears on, it Carlinya begins to think of her half-elf charge as a little sister and feels particularly protective of her. Carlinya asks Nym if she's ever been fishing, and Nym gets quite excited at this prospect. "Oh, yes! While I was working on the Sea Star, before they decided they wanted to kill me of course, we fished all the time! I tended to catch squid for some reason. It was kind of strange. Gibbons, the cook, loved it when I'd catch them, though, and he'd cook them up! I really...." Carlinya laughed saying, "Well, I have some fishing rods at home if you'd like to have a bit of fun and maybe catch our dinner." Nym nodded excitedly, and Moran groaned. "Can't we just guard her? This is the stupidest task I've ever been given. Like she needs two guards..." He grumbled under his breath.

The three fished for a few hours before Nym got distracted and started collecting sea shells. Carlinya continued to fish contentedly, but Moran watched Nym like she was some sort of dangerous animal. "Shouldn't we watch her more closely?" said Moran, annoyed. Carlinya ignored him. Nym had wandered about 40 feet off and was watching fish in a tidal pool, which made Moran uncomfortable. After a bit, Nym grew tired of the silver fish darting around the pool and trotted back to her guards. "We have enough fish for a nice dinner." Said Carlinya, smiling. Nym smiled back and began looking at the fish and asking what types they were. Carlinya patiently answered Nym's questions as she picked up their fishing supplies. Moran glared at Nym.

Carlinya led the group back to her place, where they skinned and filleted the fish. She showed Nym how to slice the fish and left her to it while she cut some vegetables. "You shouldn't let her have a knife." Said Moran, exasperated. Again Carlinya ignored him. She'd decided long ago that Nym was generally harmless and a sweet girl who must have simply stumbled into some trouble through no fault of her own. "How long did you sail with the Sea Star?" asked Carlinya. "A few months only," replied Nym. "I traded work as a cabin boy for passage to Waterdeep. I learned some about the riggings and sails and such, but not too much. Have you ever worked on a ship?" Carlinya smiled and responded, "Yes, actually. My father was a sailor, and I worked on his ship from the time I could walk until just two years ago when he died. I miss the sea."

As the sun began to set, Carlinya and Moran led Nym to the courthouse. Moran left after they entered the building to inform the court that one of the city heroes had arrived for the trial. Carlinya let Nym to where her friends were waiting. Nym waved at them excitedly. She still hadn't really processed that they were on trial for murder and may be thrown in jail or executed. Carlinya stopped Nym 20 feet away from her friends and bent down to whisper in the half-elf's ear, "Don't worry little sister. I won't let them throw you in a dungeon to rot. Be brave little one." She hugged Nym, and turned to leave as Nym hopped toward her friends excitedly.
