The Lady's College

Here is a crude map of the Lady's College.

  1. Darvin and Talathel: I'm continuing your conversation with the wizard here.

Ezekiel continued walking, ignoring both of their comments about calling. "The Headmistress is in the blue building ahead of us. It is colored blue to signify the transient nature of the college and those that run it, and is a constant reminder that rulers may come and go, but our school shall remain." As he walked, he blathered on about the school, and how it was such-and-such's idea to paint the buildings of the college different colors, and how it had been the senior project of one of the students to find a way to permanently color each building with a single spell. The spell was of limited usefulness, as it took a full hour to cast, and required the object to be colored to be surrounded by small rocks of the same color, but was a good way to show that the student could creatively use magic to new ends, and so was enough to grant her her papers. That was three Heads ago, back when... Unfortunately, before he could finish his story, he arrived at the door to the Headmistress' reception desk.

"And here I leave you, sirs. If you have any requests while you are here, please don't hesitate to seek me out." And with that, Ezekiel continued walking, talking to himself as if he was still giving the lecture on the college's history...

  2. Talathel wanted desperately to state his opinion on wizards, but given his surroundings he summoned the strength to hold his tongue.

  3. It looks like a very terrible jigsaw puzzle...

Darvin opened the door and walked up to the receptionists desk.

  4. I said it was crude. I was in a hurry, okay? I'll do better next time.

The receptionist was a halfling, and appeared to be very entrenched in a large stack of paperwork. She did not look up to see who the visitors were, but said, "Headmistress Tainaste does not have any appointments until 10. Are you her 10 o'clock meeting, or do you have another request?"

  5. It's roughly 9:30 right now, so you'd be really early to be her 10 o'clock.

  6. "Um, no. We are not her 10 o'clock. But we would like to ask her a few questions about a friend of ours who we think may have or maybe travelling here. Is there anyway, we could speak to her for a few minutes?" Darvin winked at her.

  7. The woman looked up and smiled brilliantly at Darvin. "Of course. She's just having her morning glass of cider and preparing for the day's events. Follow me." The woman jumped up, and led them down a hallway to several chairs sitting beside a door. "Wait here for one moment," she said, as she opened the door and went inside for a moment, shutting the door behind her.

"Headmistress, there are two men to see you about a friend of theirs. Could you spare a moment?"

Another female voice answered, sounding gracious and strong. "Of course, Julippe. Show them in."

A moment later, the door opened, and the halfling woman showed the two men in, giving Darvin a wink in return. "May I present Headmistress Danelle Tainaste," she said, and then excused herself and closed the door behind her, leaving Darvin and Talathel standing in front of the Headmistress' desk.

  8. After the door closed Darvin introduced them to the headmistress. "Good morning Headmistress, " Darvin said with a bow, "I am Darvin Amblecrown and this is Talathel Braegen. We are looking for a friend of ours, Nym, who we believe has either come here or is on her way here. She must have been quite a star here, considering there is a statue of her out front. Have you seen her?"

  9. "Is this some kind of cruel joke?" The Headmistress asked? "Nym is dead, and this macabre humor is not amusing in the least."

    ReplyDelete
  10. "Not at all, Madam. We can assure you that this is no joke. Nym is very much alive."

  11. The woman looked both surprised, and taken aback. "Nym is alive..." She looked lost in thought and memory for almost a full minute, as if she had completely forgotten that Darvin and Talathel were still there. Suddenly, she shook her head, as if shaking off a fog. "Thank you for this wonderful news. Are any of her original companions with her? Wayrn, Moran, Avarn? Rahm?"

  12. "Those names are not familiar to us. When we met Nym she was alone." Darvin then explained to the Headmistress about the tsunami, the wererats, finding Nym in the sewer, the party, being arrested and the most recent trip up to Silverymoon.

  13. "That does sound a bit like the Nym I remember. It sounds like you have been on quite an adventure with her. As you can tell from my reaction, I have not seen her. However, if she is headed to Silverymoon, it is likely that she will stop here at some point." The Headmistress stood up and walked to a small cabinet at the side of her office, opened the top drawer, and drew out two flat, round stones about 3 fingers across and 1 finger tall. She brought them back to her desk, and pushed one to Darvin. "These are whisper stones. They allow people to communicate across a distance. If I see her, I will contact you with this stone. They are partnered, so if I touch my stone, yours will start to glow to let you know I wish to talk. Once you touch yours, the link is connected, and any words spoken into the engraved ear on the top of the stone will be repeated at the other ear. I am rather busy with the affairs of running the university, and will not be watching the stone to see if you are trying to contact me, but if Nym does arrive, I will let you know through these stones."

  14. "Thank you very much, Headmistress. We really appreciate it." Darvin took the stones and handed one to Talathel. The two friends then walked out of the office. "Well, I guess we should go back to the inn and see what happens," said Darvin.

  15. Talathel gives a slight bow before the headmistress. Though he does not usually make such gestures, he got the feeling that a weight had just been lifted off the shoulders of an extremely busy woman.

He followed Darvin out of the room and into the courtyard. He looks at the shadows and determines its still morning.

"Well then, shall we get a bite to eat? I have a feeling our journey is near an end. Perhaps we can celebrate with a proper meal."

  16. As they entered the courtyard, a group of 5 teenage girls passes them, returning to the school from somewhere else. As they passed, Talathel thought one of them looked somewhat familiar, and as he turned to continue looking at her, she got a look of recognition in her eyes. Talathel tapped Darvin on the shoulder. "Look! Isn't that..."

As Darvin turned around and before he could finish, the halfling girl ran over. "DARVIN!" and with that, she jumped up to give Darvin a hug. Surprisingly, her arms made it up to his lower ribcage. He looked down, a bit taken aback, and said, "Mashy?"

Happy to be recognized, the halfling girl started climbing up Darvin and kissing his neck before he could do anything else.

  17. Out of habit, Talathel took a pull from his flask. Much to his chagrin, it was empty.

  18. Darvin was shocked to see Mashy all the way out here in Silverymoon. He also realized how this complicated things for him. It seemed like such a long time ago since he had left Secomber. He had grown quite a bit since then and while at one point he had had feelings for this girl he didn't anymore. And that made her kissing up on him rather awkward.

"Hello Mashy," Darvin said as he pried her off of him and put her back on the ground, "What in the world are you doing here?"

    ReplyDelete
  19. "I'm going to school here, obviously. After you left, I realized that I didn't want to be stuck in Secomber anymore. I decided being able to use magic would be a fun way to mix it up a bit. What are you doing here?"
