Caveat Emptor

Illuvaen and Nym walked down the curved streets towards the market in Flaxen Hair Square. The buildings were large, some covered with vines, some with trees, others seemed to look like living creatures. The cobblestones changed colors and played soft notes.
"Dohn Aeskmi used to be high in the order... but he had some problems as the orders from the leader became more and more amoral. He then faked his death and fled from the Monastery." He smiled at her as they turned down the street into a large square filled with tents, leaves, trees and multicolored banners. Some of the carts floated above the square along with several large balloons.
"As for Darvin... I suspect he just feels out of place, disjointed, and is having a hard time adapting. Maybe he feels threatened."

  1. "It's like Silverymoon... but not," Nym said as she brushed her fingers against a vine. Colors rippled through the tiny flowers growing on the plant as she touched them. Nym sighed, dropping her hand. I wonder if Darvin had ever even been away from home before I'd met him...Perhaps I'm just used to such strange things happening, though Nym, as she watched the colorful ripples flow through the flowers like waves on the water.

"Have you ever spoken to Mr. Aeskmi before?" Nym asked, smiling at Illuvaen. He smiled back at her. She noticed he still smelled of the forest. Do I really want to leave this world? she asked herself.

  2. "One of the beautiful things about this place is the endless possibilities." He took a hold of the vine and tugged. From far above the vine fell and crashed to the ground. As it hit the ground exploded into a thousand pieces of dust. "O course, it can be confusing. "I spoke to Dohn when I studied here several years ago. He is a very interesting man and should be helpful if we can find him."

    ReplyDelete
  3. "What did you study?" asked Nym, surprised to hear that Illuvaen was apparently not only a prince, half-elf, handsome, musically inclined, and familiar with the forest, but he was also educated. Could this man be any more perfect? wondered Nym as they strolled toward the square.

  4. "A general curriculum. I studied music, magic, history and literature. However, because of my station in life I was forced to focus primarily in politics." As thy neared a store he grabbed a set of odd looking fruit and paid the clerk with two silver coins. "I am certain that you won't expect this taste... did you attend a college?"

    ReplyDelete
  5. Nym took the fruit and bit through the soft purple skin of the fruit. It tasted smokey and a bit like honey and clover all at once. "This is amazing!" said Nym, enjoying the strange fruit. Pipper smelled the fruit and licked a bit of juice running down Nym's arm before going back to sleep in the crook of her arm. "No, I never went to college. I attended a school of magic when I was young, but... I left," Nym responded. "I spent most of my life traveling," she said, smiling at Illuvaen.

    ReplyDelete
  6. "That sounds pleasant. I must admit that I have often felt the wanderlust..." He took a bite of his fruit. "But I have had little chance to truly travel." He turned towards her "with all the traveling you have done do you think you could ever stay in one place..." He turned his large eyes onto Nym. "I mean..." he paused "is there anything going on with you and Darvin? I have seen the way he looks at you."

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nym blinked, unsure of the answer herself. "...Uh, well..." Nym frowned and her brows furrowed. "I thought so, but now I'm not sure, to be honest. He's... well, I kissed him, and he hasn't seemed particularly interested since then. Just...moody." Nym was quiet for a moment. "I'm not sure he's the person I thought he was... And he knows almost nothing about me nor I about him, which certainly wouldn't suggest we have any sort of relationship."

  8. ha... we are in the same room right now, so I am not actually writing all of these.

    ReplyDelete
  9. He looked away for a moment. "I must admit that I am also quite taken with you. Of course, I wouldn't want to get in the way of anything that could be or that which is meant to be. You are visitors to this world and brought here by an unknown force so I do not know how much I should try to romance you." He turned back to Nym. "But, if I could perhaps treat you to an evening on the town?"

    ReplyDelete
  10. "I..." Nym blushed looked down, smiling. "I would like that very much," she finished, shaking her hair out of her face and looking up at Illuvaen.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Illuvaen, for once blushed slightly himself, "I hope you forgive my subterfuge - there was little chance of Donh being in the marketplace..." he smiled nervously "I just wanted to get a chance to treat you to a night in the city. Now, where perchance could I take you - the museum district, a concert, or dancing? Or, if you are looking for something a little less formal I could also take you on a tour of some of my favorite spots while I studied here."

    ReplyDelete
  12. Nym laughed, amused by Illuvaen's 'trick.' "I'd love to see some of your favorite places," she replied. She smiled widely at Illuvaen as they began walking.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Illuvaen winked back and offered his arm. Nym, continuing to smile wickedly, took it and they walked through the market toward the university district. Along the way Illuvaen pointed out famous buildings such as Jorex's famous underground tower, Oporasses bubble palace and the always impressive semi-functional pyramid.
"What makes it semi-functional?" Nym asked.
"Well, because only half of it was built."
"So it isn't really a pyramid?"
"No." he said laughing... "the architect wasn't the smartest."

Eventually Illuvaen led them through the gates of the university and into the quad. The university was a mixture of stone, wood, and what appeared to be living and growing buildings. They walked hand in hand and Illuvaen pointed out the magic building, the music building, as well as his old dormitory. After a little bit he took him to his favorite restaurant. As he stepped inside the maître d shouted excitedly.
"Prince Illuvaen! It is such a pleasure to see thee again! Come with me, you and your exceedingly lovely companion shall have the best seat in the house."
"Oh thank you Hl'ith. It is good to be back."
The maître d led them through the restaurant and to a seat with a view overlooking the city. Illuvaen gave a quick order and turned back toward Nym. Before he could answer two bowls one with a red paste and the other with blue were set on the table along with a small pile of flatbread.
"What of your other companions - has it just been you, Darvin, and Talathel?"

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nym broke a piece of flatbread and dipped it in the blue paste. "There's also Beranhond, a cleric, and the crew of my ship," replied Nym, the corner of her mouth curling upward into a sassy smile. She knew the 'my ship' part always drew people's attention.

    ReplyDelete
  15. "You own a ship?" He smiled dipping a piece of bread into the red paste. "I am impressed, what are you planning on doing with it?"
The maître d returned after a moment with a large bottle. On the label was a woman that looked oddly familiar.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nym laughed, "Well, it was inherited, in a manner of speaking, so it's not all that impressive. And, honestly, I have no idea what to do with it! I spent most of my life wandering alone, so it's been rather strange to be tied to any place, really..." As the bottle was brought out, Nym looked intently at the picture. "Who is this on the bottle?" she asked.

    ReplyDelete
  17. "Well, being tied to one place isn't all that bad." Illuvaen seemed oddly confused by the label. "It is from the... Narath estates? I have never heard of this label."

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nym stared at the bottle, shocked, and stood up quickly, knocking over her chair in surprise. She looked around the room quickly, and then felt rather embarrassed as several people were now looking at her confused. Their waiter had quickly picked up the chair for her, and Nym sat down, blushing.

She leaned forward, "I'm so sorry about that... It's only..." Nym took a deep breath; she was clearly flustered. "Out cleric serves the goddess Narath... I didn't expect to see her name here, especially since Beranhond did not arrive in this world with us."

    ReplyDelete
  19. "What do you mean?" Before he had a chance to look at anything the label turned to Nym.
"Hi Nym... I can't stay here long, but Beranhond asked me to check in on you three. He is quite worried."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nym smiled, not knowing exactly how to respond to the sudden appearance of speaking wine label goddess. "We're doing quite well, actually. We're working on a plan to get back to our world," she replied to Narath.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "Who are you talking to?" Illuvaen asked.
"I am glad to hear that - Beranhond will be pleased. In either case, I have no idea where you are in particular and my powers are incredibly feeble where you are, but I have been able to discern that whatever sent you to that world is still in that world, so do be careful." She disappeared or a moment. "Oh, and your bodies will start to fade away before too long... so don't get too comfortable."

    ReplyDelete
  22. should read...
She disappeared for a moment before popping back up on the wine bottle. "Oh, and your bodies will start to fade away before too long... so don't get too comfortable." Narath than smiled and vanished.
"Who were you talking to Nym?" Illuvaen said. "I didn't see anything."

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nym laughed. "Would you believe a goddess?" she replied, a bit bemused but also concerned about what she'd learned about their bodies in their own world. Well, there's really nothing I can do about all that right at this moment... she thought as she smiled at Illuvaen. "So tell me," said Nym, feeling she had spent far too much time talking about herself and acting crazily already, "what does a prince do to pass the time, other than save fair maidens from wicked plants and accompany adventurers to far cities?"

    ReplyDelete
  24. "A Goddess? You travel in might company indeed. I wish that we spent the majority of our time doing such acts. Sadly, most of my time is spent with paperwork and following my mother around to learn about ruling the kingdom. When I do get time off I have taken to writing prosaic poetry and experimenting with my limited magical abilities. Of course, when I am feeling like pressing boundaries or being dangerous I will sometimes engage in more, well, I guess you could call them thrilling hobbies. What does a magic using owner of a ship do in her free time?"

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nym sipped the wine and smiled. Limited magical abilities?! she thought. It was rare for a magic user to be anything but feared in Faerun, with the exception of places like Silverymoon or the High Forest. Nym sat forward in earnest. "What kind of abilities do you have? Are you trained or is it natural born? Which side of your family is your ability from?" Nym's eyes shone with excitement as she asked Illuvaen about magic.

    ReplyDelete
  26. He laughed. "You didn't meet my father did you? He is really only good at hunting and fishing. All the magic talent comes from my mother who is a very talented seeress. I I think the scholars say that my magic ability is native born - but that it can only be tapped through training. I am not able to intuitively tap or use any of it. At this point I can only do a few things that are simply amusing rather than useful. Where did your magic come from?"

    ReplyDelete
  27. "No, I didn't meet him," said Nym, smiling. "I suppose I could have guessed your mother, the seeress, was the reason for your abilities! My magic comes from my mother as well, though I never knew her, so I'm not sure what the extent of her abilities were. I find myself always growing in ability, with or without training..." For a moment, Nym thought on this. How strange that I become more adept without the help of training... she shrugged this thought off and smiled at Illuvaen. "What are these amusing things you can do with your magic?" she asked. Her thoughts were suddenly drawn to Darvin, and her heart felt a pang of anguish for a moment. She wondered what he was doing right then and felt strangely apprehensive about it. Nym looked around the restaurant and said, “I wonder if we shouldn’t be getting back to make sure Talathel and Darvin haven’t destroyed half the city in drunken debauchery.” She smiled, masking the uneasiness she suddenly felt.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Illuvaen laughed and looked slightly confused "I would be impressed if they could take down the city. One of the big events in the spring is a city wide bonfire."

Do send me an email justifying your ill feelings. I have no problem with it... as long as you can justify it

    ReplyDelete
  29. In looking at the time line you are actually several hours behind Darvin's encounter with the Shadowcaster so you wouldn't know if he was under attack.

As for knowing something was wrong... I also couldn't find any abilities in the fey section or the sorcerer in general that would let you know if he was under attack, so I am not going to grant that ability.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nym laughed. "A city-wide bonfire?! Tell me all about that!" she said, bemused by such an event.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "It is the spring festival. The idea is that since the world is being renewed and cleaned so should the city. So, all the different districts have a competition to see who can make the largest bonfire and burn the most amount of refuse, trash, and filth that they can find. If a particularly ugly building is burned down as well even better!" He laughed. "It is quite the spectacle. There is also a wide variety of drinking, partying, and costume wearing that accompanies the event."

    ReplyDelete
  32. "That sounds wonderful! I've never been to anything like that in my world." Nym laughed thinking about drunken people dancing around piles of burning trash.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "This is a really fun city. In the winter the university has a competition to see who can make the largest sculptures out of ice. If there isn't any ice part of the competition is to make enough of it." Illuvaen said wistfully while leaning back in his chair and eating some more of the dip. As he leaned back the waiter brought out two large plates of what appeared to be noodles and purple fruit. "This is one of the famous dishes of this city. Naturally, that means a hundred years ago it was peasant food."

    ReplyDelete
  34. "It sounds fantastic," Nym replied as the food arrived. She listened to Illuvaen's explanation of the dish and tasted it. The fruit was lightly sweet and complemented the savory of the sauce and noodles well. "I can see why the upper class stole it as a famous dish," she said, smiling.

    ReplyDelete
  35. "It helped that the lower class revolted and took over the upper class. They just happened to bring their dishes along."

They continued to eat chatting vigorously. Afterward Illuvaen invited her to join him in a quick game of billhop.
"Only if you are willing though - it is quite exhilarating."

    ReplyDelete
  36. "I'm always up for a challenge," said Nym, winking. "Of course, I have no idea what billhop is, so you'll have to explain it to me."

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Well." He said leading her out of the restaurant. "That should do nicely." He led her up to the top of the building and out toward the ledge. "Billhop is a game of daring. Essentially you take one of these living ropes." He said grabbing onto a long length of rope that grew from the building. "Then, you take a running leap and see how many times you can run around the building before you lose momentum. The top runners can make it around the building at least 10 times and the record has been 20. Of course, it all depends on the building and the course and such."

    ReplyDelete
  38. "Alright," said Nym, taking hold of the vine and standing back to leap and run.

    ReplyDelete
  39. whatever the equivalent of athletics/acrobatics is. I can never keep this 3.7/4e straight

Nym nodded and lept down to play this strange game.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As Nym jumps off the building she feels the wind rush past her face and the vine go taught in her hand. She shifts her weight quickly and heads toward the first side of the building. As she does so she feels the wind speed past her quicker than before. The corner building is approaching to closely for comfort so Nym shifts her weight and thus she slips by narrowly. However, this causes her to veer swing to far to the right. She shifts her weight again to swing her back toward the building and manages to make it around the second corner. She can already feel the momentum slowing down. However, she manages to make it all the way around the building before her feet catch on the wall of the building at full stop.
    "Nicely done!"

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tentatively Nym picks one foot off the building wall to see if she'll stay put. When she does, she looks down to the ground through her dangling hair and back up at Illuvaen. She smiles broadly and laughs, "Now how exactly do I get down from here?!"

    ReplyDelete
  43. "Well, that is the trick part. You could climb, or you could impress me by showing off some of your magic!" Illuvaen called down laughing. "You did a lot better than most first timers!"

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nym grinned mysteriously and made a quick gesture to the vines and plants on and near the building. For a moment, the plants seemed to be shivering before they exploded into wild growth. After a few moments, it became clear the plants were forming a ladder, and once it was finished, Nym smiled at Illuvaen and gingerly climbed onto the plant ladder. "Should I show off like this?" she said, batting her eyelashes.

    ReplyDelete
  45. "Very impressive. I certainly can't do anything Like that. My main talent is noticing things and being persuasive and leading. Of course..." he smiled and looked at Nym with a wide grin "I have other talents that don't show up all that often."

    ReplyDelete
  46. *mischievously, not mysteriously

    ReplyDelete
  47. "What talents are those?" asked Nym, still a little too naive to really understand to what Illuvaen was likely referring.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Illuvaen simply smiled back. "You are unlike most elves Nym." Then he grabbed a vine, stepped, back and took a run.

Illuvaen soared forward but quickly swung his legs around to curve the rope to the left. He easily shifted his body in order to swing around the first lap. During the second lap he started to slow, but not enough to stop him from wrapping around and finishing with just enough momentum for the a third and final lap. When he finished he grabbed a hold of the vine and walked up the wall. When he got to the top his face was flushed, but he had a very excited an gleeful look on his face.
"That was not as easy as I remember it being."

    ReplyDelete
  49. Nym stood on the rungs of her living ladder and laughed as she watched Illuvaen swing around the building. With a thought, she dismissed all the plants except a particularly sturdy vine which she held on to as it lifted her back to the roof. She peered over the edge of the building and saw Pipper still sleeping on the steps to the restaurant. Nym brushed her hair out of her face and said, "Well you certainly make it look easy!" as she smiled at Illuvaen.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "Well, back in the day I would have cleared three laps without breaking a sweat." He sat down and cleared his throat. "A lot of work just to try to impress you... did it work?"

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nym laughed. "Yes, it most certainly did!"

    ReplyDelete
  52. "Thank the creator." He said leaning back on his arms. "Tell me Nym, what is that mark on your arm? I noticed it as you were flying about."

    ReplyDelete
  53. The smile faded from Nym's face and she self-consciously covered her slave brand from Thay. She looked over the city from the rooftop and let the breeze blow her hair over her eyes. How much does he really want to know? How much do I want to tell him she asked herself. Nym sighed and smiled as she looked back to Illuvaen, trying to hide her discomfort. "It's the brand of the Red Wizards," she said, hoping he wouldn't press, but knowing he probably would.

"Interesting." He looked around. "Now, don't tell anyone about this, but I have one of those too." He raised up his shirt and on his stomach was a small mark that looked like a red dancing man with a large hat. "My college friends and I stumbled into a tattoo parolor and wound up getting ridiculous tattoos. Probably my most embarrassing moment." He paused. "On a more serious note, I can tell that this is something you do not really want to talk about, so tell me what you want to whenever you are ready. However, do not feel pressured in any way, well, other than pressure by me to spend time with me." He offered his hand. "Shall we get dessert?"

    ReplyDelete
  55. Nym laughed at the ridiculous tattoo. "It could be much worse," she said smiling at Illuvaen, "You could have a sparkling little pixie or a scowling orc instead of a little dancing man!" Nym laughed at the thought. "Dessert sounds wonderful," she replied to his suggestion.

Despite her jovial behavior, Nym was torn. Do I want to tell him about Thay? Do I not? No one has ever really shown genuine interest in where I've been or what I've been through... not even Darvin, she thought, frowning. She quickly replaced her scowl with her customary smile.

Nym, it is now your turn. In addition to the previous two fort saves you have to make another fort save (to see if you remember the spell), plus a concentration check to see if you can cast this time around.

    ReplyDelete
  68. sorry... some errors above

you have to make a concentration save for the first scorching ray attack (the previous rounds).

Then, you need to make a fort save to see if you are poisoned from the Naga's AOO.

Then, you need to make another concentration save for this round to see if your spell works.

  71. Yes, it is ridiculously complicated.

However, any spell is actually open to an attack of opportunity. That is part of the reason you will want meat shields around. If you don't like that thinking you were also open to an attack of opportunity by stepping back (remember this isn't 4e - there is no "shifting").

Also, critical doesn't do maximum damage - that is 4e, so you have to roll to see if you hit again. However, as you can see below, you weren't able to actually cast the spell.

Your concentration check is a d20+caster level+ wisdom modifier
    =
17+5+4+26 (so you were able to cast the first spell)

    18+5+4=27
(sadly, you were not able to cast that last spell - you had to beat 10+32+3=45 to be able to cast. You have lost scorching ray for the rest of the battle).

I do need a reflex check though.

Nym's spell sputters away in her hand. The naga laughs evily and prepares another spell.

  72. Actually, in Pathfinder, if you backtrack 5 feet (I think it's called a retreat) you are out of the threat range. You are the DM, though.

  73. good to know, so in that - however, casting a spell causes an attack of opportunity and sense the the naga was actively fighting you during that round it would have gotten an AOO.

  74. Attacks of Opportunity are defined as melee attacks, though, and if you are not within 5 ft, you can't make a melee attack. That is, unless you have reach.

  75. It's called a 5-foot step. Here's the link: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering---final/combat---final#TOC-Take-5-Foot-Step

  76. it does have a reach 5 - I should have mentioned that. That is why it did a tail slash at her.

    ReplyDelete
  77. ok, so you did back up, but the AOO occured when you cast the spell. The Naga's attention was still on your so it slashed its tail at you which does have reach.

  78. You know what'd be really really fun? If we made everything unnecessarily complicated and confusing!

And what's this about beating a 45 for casting spells?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yeah, i extra don't know where you're getting this 45 from.

According to the pathfinder concentration check info:
    http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Concentration

I'm seeing 10+spell level+attack of op. damage, so I really don't know where you're getting your numbers. Are you adding the total damage because it's only supposed to be the damage taken at that time. Otherwise spellcasters would be useless as any damage more than about 15 would make the DC impossible to beat AND I'd be adding my damage to the DC every time when you're supposed to use "Cast Defensively" for the DC during battles unless you're being attacked while casting.

That was a long way to say quit cheatin'!

    DC
10 + spell level (2) + damage from interrupting attack from naga (7)
    10+2+7
    19

    Which (1d20) (18) + caster level (4) + wisdom mod. (0) beats
    22

The naga is totally ded with my crit and 24 damage.

  80. Despite hitting, I f-ed up the crit with 4e rules.

    Damage 1: 4,2,1,1

    Second attack from crit: (1d20)+6
    12+6
    18

    Damage 2:
    2,5,5,4
    16

  81. alright, now that the strange convoluted rules are all followed and all the checks have been supposedly made...

Nym, you are poisoned and take on 5 damage a turn. You currently have 3 hit points left.

The Naga drops to the ground, charred and burned, sadly so too are Illuvaen and Nym.
    "You alright Nym?"
"Sure..." she says collapsing to the ground.

You will wake up the next morning in a comfy bed with a very worried, slightly blackened, Illuvaen next to you.
