Days 13-15 of the Trip South

On day 13, the crew is beginning to enter waters that are unfamiliar to anyone on board, including Thjodolf, and he recommends stopping at Calimport for maps and charts. Darvin and Nym go along to attempt to get what they'll need. Nym and Darvin, please give me an Appraise check.

On day 14, as they travel on the Shining Sea, Wildaron becomes very ill, and Beranhond attempts to heal him.  He feels nauseated, and complains of pain in his chest and belly. Beranhond, please give me a perception check, and a heal check.

On day 15, they land on the beach on Tharsault to give everyone a short bit of shore leave, and as Talathel and Lailsan are walking together, a man walks up to them and asks them a question. "I am going to give you a sentence that is missing three words. Use 3 homonyms that sound alike, such as too and two to complete this sentence, and you will have solved my riddle:
A bloodthirsty pirate will wander the ____ and essentially _____ everything he ____."
Talathel, either come up with the answer or give me a wisdom check to work it out with Lailsan's help.

  1. Perception:
    Roll(1d20)+6:
    15,+6
    Total:21

    Heal:
    Roll(1d20)+12:
    9,+12
    Total:21

Beranhond would try the touch heal on him as well, it removes sickened conditions, but not anything more serious. As a result, if that didn't work it would give him a clue as to the condition.

  2. As Beranhond inspects the man, he sees small holes in the skin of the man's abdomen, and on further inspection realizes the man has parasites.

Racking his brain, Beranhond recognizes several signs that point to the fact that these are rot grubs, and need to be removed almost immediately on their entrance into the host's body with fire or a blade, or else they become extremely dangerous to remove. Using the spell "Remove Disease" is probably the only thing that will save him now without damage.

  3. "Rot grubs? Well, this isn't good at all." Beranhond raises his hand and casts "remove disease."
He then turns to Aelysin, who had been assisting, and tells her that they should search out where the rot grubs came from.

  4. Talathel and Darvin, your input please?

  5. Talathel thought about it for a bit. "Not the best student, but monks played word games like this all the time. Should be able to figure it out."

He began to think outloud. "Pirates will wander the oceans...no...waters...o...sea. Hmm, lots of words sound like sea. A bloodthirsty pirate will wander the sea, and essentialy see...no, there's no other word that sounds like sea.

"What about seize, as in take?" Lailsan chimed in.

Talathel gave her a smile. "Very true, my love. I think it would go something like..."A bloodthirsty pirate will wander the seas and essentially seize everything he sees."

  6. Talathel's answer takes the man by surprise, and he doesn't respond for a second. "Right ye are, me friend. Name yer reward, then."

Lailsan looks at Talathel, "What does he mean, reward? And why is he trying to reward you for something I came up with?"

  7. During the course of the negotiations, Darvin developed a sudden, intense illness, and began vomiting all over the floor. Nym used the distraction to change the deal slightly at the last moment, getting a great trade for the charts they need.

  8. Beranhond heals the man, and finds out from talking to him that he visited a market where fresh meat was on sale, and he suspects not all of it was of the finest quality. Perhaps someone was trying to sell some with rot grubs infesting it.

  9. Beranhond is going to go and check the rest of the meat for rot grubs.

  10. "I don't know what he means. And I would like to think he's rewarding us for something that we came up with together."

  11. Beranhond, the meat he was referring to was in a market in Calimport, which is now a day's sailing behind you. You examine the meat on board the ship, and find no rot grubs present.

  12. The man waits patiently for Talathel to tell him what he wants, silently watching Talathel and Lailsan, not offering any more clues as to what he meant.

  13. Talathel is also a bit weary. "I suppose the ship could always use a bit more gold to make our next stop in port a bit easier, what can you do for us there?"

  14. "Aye, and ye shall have your gold." The man says, and then vanishes in a poof of smoke. In his place is a small pouch, which Lailsan picks up and opens. Seeing the glint of gold inside, she picks an object out, and says, "They're gold shaped into the letter C. A bag of C's. What an odd man."
