The Evening's Ceremony

Kilink spent the day mingling with the humans and Loxos at the rendezvous. They were able to acquire horses for the members of the group that did not have them, and as promised, when the sun began to light up the western sky like a giant bonfire, the people cleared out the center of the camp, and started their own bonfire. Slowly, people gathered and began talking amongst themselves, eager to be a witness to this ceremony. Darvin, Talathel, and Nym all sat about 2 rows back from the front, in a gap between two groups of loxos. Beranhond had been asked to take a place of honor in the front row so he could step forward at the right time and play a small part of the ceremony to answer some of the questions he had asked. Conversation within the many groups stayed at a rather loud level, with individuals not keeping to their own group, and engaging others around them freely. There was a joyous, expectant mood in the air.

As the sun continued its descent, the yellow sky became a muted blue with an orange center and then a purple tinged navy with a small red orb. As the red began to fall beyond the horizon, a trumpet blared, announcing the ceremony's beginning. At this point, three loxos painted with purple and blue geometric symbols charged into the center of the gathering and stopped, landing with a thud in a circle centered around the fire. Beranhond saw one throw a handful of powder into the fire, and it flared up, blinding everyone as three humans raced in and joined them. When everyone's eyes had become readjusted, everyone saw the three humans as if they had just appeared there by magic. The trick was repeated for another group of Loxos, but this time it was a smoking, rumbling powder instead of a flash. Taking the sloppy theatrics as a sign of the way the rest of the ceremony was going to go, Beranhond groaned inwardly, suspecting that this ceremony was put on by a bunch of magicians rather than priests, who made a living off of this "show." No gods were involved in these petty magics, and as the evening went on, his suspicions were only confirmed more and more.

Likewise, Nym noticed that there was nothing magical about the ceremony. The flames were simple tricks, and she could do more magical things when she was four years old than the priests were attempting to show this evening. Darvin was enjoying just being able to sit and watch without having to do anything for a change, and Talathel took a quick second to take a pull from his flask, which made the evening much more enjoyable.

The ceremony was rather quick, and the portion where Beranhond's and others' questions were answered seemed to all of Kilink very vague and superficial. Beranhond was told, "An unknown evil approaches! Beware, or it could spell your doom, and that of all your loved ones." To have the whole day's waiting come to such a hokey ceremony was very disappointing, but out of respect for these people's beliefs, Beranhond accepted the answer and sat down. The rest of the ceremony was uneventful, and ended with a burst of sparks in which all of the priests "disappeared" out of the center and "reappeared" scattered among the crowd as if they had been there the whole time. The gathering broke up slowly, and people began to head back to their beds and individual camps for the end of the evening. Beranhond joined the rest of the group as they headed out of the circle back to their tents.

  1. Beranhond kept his own choice comments to himself as he found his way inside the tent.
"Well, perhaps this is what I get for seeking help from other Gods." He muttered.
"Well, it depends on what kind of help you are trying to seek Eth..." Narath's voice said in his head.
Beranhond blushed and went to sleep.

  2. As Beranhond walked back to his tent, before he went to sleep, a Loxo he had seen earlier when he had asked about the evil near Waterdeep approached him. "I can see you're not very satisfied with the answers you received there. Would you be interested in a different type of 'ceremony?'" The Loxo asked. The way he said ceremony implied that he looked upon the ceremony that had just been held with distaste.

  3. Darvin walked back from the ceremony thinking it would have been nice to get some hard facts rather than vague proclamations but what can you do? He was walking with Nym and Talathel. No one was particularly talkative on the walk back but Darvin was feeling a bit mischievous, and when he was sure no one was looking, he slid his hand into Nym's. A smile crossed his face as they walked hand in hand back to their tents.

  4. Caught in her own thoughts, Nym was surprised when Darvin took her hand. She blushed for a moment and then just enjoyed the moment as they walked together.

  5. Beranhond looked at the Loxo questioningly.
"I could be inclined... especially if it more useful than cheap tricks."

  6. The loxo led Beranhond to another tent a little ways away from Kilink's camp, and held the door open for Beranhond, closing the tent flap behind him.

Beranhond stepped into a dark enclosure that was lit only by three pillars that had glowing symbols all over them. The symbols represented several different giant gods and godesses, and there were several that Beranhond recognized that had to do with knowledge and patience.

The loxo gestured for Beranhond to sit, and he found a sitting pillow in front of the three pillars. Instead of finding his own seat, as Beranhond expected, the loxo quickly but gently grabbed Beranhond's head in his huge hands, and instantly, Beranhond had a sensation of his consciousness floating out of his body as images inundated his mind...

I will continue this soon, hopefully I'll have time before bed. Sorry I didn't have time for the whole thing right now.

  7. Beranhond became aware that he was watching a scene that was obviously not intended to be intruded upon. A group of 6 hooded figures kneeled behind a figure that Beranhond recognized instantly. The man in front was the man who had attacked him at the Lathander training camp, and he was talking to a black-taloned hand that rested on a pillow before him.

A voice was sounding in the room, though no mouths moved. "...in 1 weeks' time, you shall perform the rite of cleansing. It is the first step to the greater glory of your god and all the faithful. Prepare for the ritual, and upon its completion, I shall direct you further. All must be ready in 2 moons..."

The vision faded as abruptly as it had begun, and Beranhond found himself again on the pillow, with the icy shock of his disembodied experience still chilling his veins as well as the anger that this vision had been thrust upon him without his consent.

The Loxo took his hands off of Beranhond's head, and walked around in front of him.

  8. "Well, that was boring," Talathel said to know one in particular. He did not care if he offended any of the Loxo. He made his way back to camp, slightly disappointed in the culture.

  9. "Yeah, it's always a bit disappointing, but you get used to it." said a voice to Talathel's right. He turned to see a big loxo walking in the same general direction. "They used to have so much power and majesty, but lately they just keep on putting on the ceremonies as a charade. It used to be something spectacular, though." The loxo trailed off, obviously lost in the memory.

  10. As they arrived back at their tents, Darvin stopped and looked at Nym. He was struck with how much she had changed in the time they had spent together. She had been an unassuming girl when they had first met and now had blossomed into a young woman of beauty. Without saying anything, he smiled and kissed her on the forehead. And then climbed into his tent for the night.

  11. A voice Darvin hadn't heard for some time spoke up once he'd entered the tent. "So what be ye doin' down here? Ye think these loxos and these orcs can help ye fight the kind o' evil ye'll be findin' when ye return to Waterdeep?" The ring's questions were only in Darvin's mind, but they sounded clear in his thoughts nonetheless.

  12. Beranhond looked at the Loxo angrily.
"That would have been much less upsetting if you had asked me for permission - or told me what you were about to do." He shook his head as the voices continued talking away. "However, if I understood the meaning properly... than we have two months to unravel this evil."

It wouldn't have been nearly as upsetting for Beranhond if it was someone like Liara looking into his mind instead of a Loxo

  13. The loxo replied to Beranhond, "I am sorry for upsetting you. That was not my intent. I am not always certain how to do Iallanis' will, and I fear her anger. We only want to help you. Iallanis told us about Kilink, and we all wish to do whatever we can to help you. Please, let us."

  14. And yes, Liara would have been much more pleasant than a loxo who hasn't even told you his name yet.

  15. "You seem to imply that there's possibly more to this than what the priests will show? Imagine that.." Talathel said, seeing if the loxo would give him more information.

  16. "Hmm? Oh. It's not so much that they don't want to show more. It's just that the priests who run the ceremonies have lost their spark. They have lost their magic. They won't talk about it, but I'm not the only one who's noticed." The loxo replied.

  17. Nym was not expecting a forehead kiss at the end of the night. As she watched Darvin quickly climb into his tent, she couldn't help but chuckle. After standing for a moment alone, Nym realized Beranhond and Talathel had gone off somewhere.

Nym looked up at the dusky sky. The stars hadn't yet started to come out and there was still enough light in the twilight for her to walk about without issue. The cool air of the evening had begun to creep in making it the perfect time to take Nesme and Pipper out for a run. She whistled for Pipper, who bounced out of the tent, and untied Nesme. Nym didn't bother to saddle the horse and she rode away from the encampment with Pipper running along side the horse, barking happily.

  18. Beranhond glared at him for a moment, but then let it drop.
"Well... I do thank you for your assistance and the vision was certainly illuminating. What else can you tell us, or assist us with?"

  19. "We have managed to slip a disciple of Sune among the followers of Bane that you are after. This disciple passes the important events of her days to us in dreams, so we only get small pieces of information from her." The loxo paused. "From the vision that I passed on to you, it does appear that Bane is preparing something very important for 7 weeks from now. However, I would urge you to not overestimate Bane, either. Just because he has major plans for 2 moons' time does not mean that he will have an ultimate victory in 2 months' time. As long as there are those who value love, the lord of hatred will have opposition in this world. If you found the vision useful, I may be able to include you in future visions. I promise it would not be so... invasive this way."

  20. Everyone seems to have stopped posting for one reason or another. I will assume that:
    A) You are all pretty happy with the horses you gained and you're ready to move on, or
    B) That you stopped caring about the conversations you were carrying on or the actions you were in the middle of, or
    C) You were all crazy busy yesterday.

One way or another, please finish up so we can move on.

  21. I forgot we even were given horses.
    Beranhond simply nodded.
"In either case, I would prefer us to unravel the evil before it gains even more. If the visions are less invasive they would certainly be useful."

  22. "All you must do is read this magic incantation aloud, and any messages that are passed on by our contact in Bane's camp will be passed to you in your dreams. There is no warning they will come, but you will see all that we see." With this, the loxo gently handed a parchment to Beranhond. "This spell will work for your companions as well. Please guard that parchment well, as it works for anyone who reads it aloud."

  23. After running her pets, Nym watched the stars for a bit before returning to her tent, brushing down Nesme, and curled up in her tent with Pipper to sleep.

  24. Beranhond, I will assume that you offered the dreams to everyone and that one way or another either everyone will share the vision-dreams or you will tell them about them when you are done.

Everyone else, I will continue on from here with your search for the orcs. Feel free to interject if you have any other things to add. I intend to post a lot of the trip on Sunday and Monday, and will only stop the search if something really important or interesting shows up.
