I would vote for going over to Moonshae and asking people there some questions. They may have some differing opinions about what is going on. We may also consider not taking the Lady Narath, just in case something happens to our ship.
No "random" computer generated number is truly random, but I would say that having the same number twice in a row does happen, even in the real world. The chances that you will get the same number twice in a row should be 1/20.
Talathel, will you be trying to be covert as well?
Talathel and Nym have little trouble booking passage aboard the Viceroy, a merchant ship that makes regular runs between Llewellyn and Baldur's Gate.
Talathel's cover is not especially great, however, and the captain recognizes him from his earlier visits to the dock. On recognizing him, Captain Geoff gives Talathel an inquiring look, then looks at Nym, sees a shapely young half-elf girl, and starts grinning before accepting their coin and leaving them to their cabins.
Other than the odd wink from the captain to Talathel, the journey is relatively uneventful until they get to Llewellyn.
Talathel and Llewellyn disembark from their ship at Llewellyn and are greeted by the sight of a small ship sunk in the harbor, obviously badly burned, and with several corpses hanging from the rigging, still with charred flesh hanging from their bones. They have obviously not been there long enough to decompose much.
I didn't come up with Llewellyn. It's the name of the port town they are in. I just swapped the name of a person with the name of a place. And if you have time to berate me on my use of names, why don't you have time to post about whether you're going to pursue the mugger?
Talathel would like to go to a tavern or other gathering where he may find sailors (and even officers) of ships to see what they know or heard. It may be gossip, but there may be some truth to it if the same stories or theories come up. He wants to ask...
1. I've heard of multiple attacks on ships, have you heard why it's happening? 2. Who is doing the attacking? Why? 3. Have you witnessed an attack on another ship?
Nym can add in some questions, or if she wants to investigate on her own, that's fine too.
Talathel and Nym notice that there are four bodies hanging from the rigging as they pass the ship. They both catch several quiet, grim looks at the ship that is sunk in the harbor as they head further from the water. There are two checkpoints between the harbor and the main part of the city.
The first stop is rather quick, and is a man and a woman who ask them for their names and where they are coming from. The man compares the names to a list he is holding, and the woman goes through a small stack of papers with drawings of people's faces. She is obviously inspecting everyone that passes to see if they match someone from her stack.
The second stop is simple, as well. The three men guarding the gate to the city center ask what Nym and Talathel's business is in Llewellyn and warn that there have been several issues recently with people taking justice into their own hands, so they should be very careful that they don't break any laws. They nod meaningfully at the harbor as they say talk about "justice".
Talathel finds a man at a table who is easily persuaded to discuss the local events over a cup of rum. Talathel is more than happy to oblige, and gets a mug himself.
As they drink, the man introduces himself as Rufus, and unwinds a long tale of how he came to be in Llewellyn and how his previous work of being a fisherman just became too dangerous with all of the vigilantes out and about, so now he's waiting for things to blow over and trying to keep himself warm and dry as long as possible.
As he talks, Talathel interjects with questions about the attacks, and finds that there for the past two months, there has been a lot of confusion and chaos with the druids of the isles, who have normally been a source of stability, knowledge, and peaceful conflict negotiation.
That has not been the case of late. Groups of druids have been traveling around the islands looking for vengeance. They claim that their leaders were assassinated, and they are looking for anyone associated with the killers. Other groups are loudly advocating an isolationist agenda, separating the Moonshae Isles as completely independent of the rest of the world and having nothing to do with it. Still other groups are pushing for armed conquest of the rest of the Sword Coast. There are even some peaceful groups trying to calm everyone down and get them back under control.
The druids have always organized themselves by charisma more than anything, with no formal hierarchy. This has been a source of strength for them in the past. If a leader passes away, someone just steps up to fill the role and everyone goes on as before.
This time, it is different. The different ideologies of the druids have all somehow split into their own factions, and all seem to be working independently now. Leading by charisma can be a good thing, but it has turned the isles to madness.
Rufus wound down with, "So you can see why I had to give up fishing for now, eh?" He tapped his empty cup on the table, "Any more coin in that purse for some more rum?"
And I'm sorry I've been slow. It's been a pretty hectic week for me. Nym, this person that Talathel found was probably the best source of info in the place, so I think you following along to talk to him would be best.
Is there anything more you'd like to know from him? Any probing questions, or clarifications?
Ah, one more question for the man. "Let's say I wanted to get in with the druids. Maybe join up with them, or just get close enough to observe them. How'd I do that?"
"That's not too hard. Just find a druid. The temple in the center of town is a place where they tend to get together, or there's the ones doing inspections down at the pier that you probably passed earlier. Come to think of it, the ones at the temple are more likely to be willing to chat about membership into their cult, though you never know who you'll run into with all of this chaos. Why are you thinking about joining up?" Rufus asks.
Rufus responds, "I suppose that was a bit of a strong word to use. They're a religious sect, and they tend to see everything in terms of for or against their precious Istishia. As a fisherman, I know that it's important not to anger the sea. But you gotta have a place for cities and people too, don't ya? If everyone lived like a druid, we'd all be living in caves drinking our own piss!" Apparently this last comment was a great joke, and Rufus started laughing appreciatively at himself.
Kodi and I are going to be gone for a funeral for a few days. I will unlikely be posting for the time being.

ReplyDeleteSounds good to me!
ReplyDeleteAlright. Just a couple questions, and we can be on our way.
ReplyDelete1) Will you be trying to be covert about this fact gathering mission?
2) Is there anywhere in particular you'd like to go? Someplace near an attack or just on the islands in general?
3) Nym, are you planning on bringing Nesme?
1. I would like to be covert.
ReplyDelete2. Nym will explore first wherever Talathel wants to.
3. No, Nym will leave Nesme with the Lady Nareth crew.
Thanks. What precautions are you going to take to avoid notice?
ReplyDeleteIf you are trying to disguise your physical appearances, please give me a stealth check.
If you are trying to use a false identity, please give me a bluff check.

Does the dice roller often roll the same number twice in a row? That was weird...

ReplyDeleteSorry that I used "Llewellyn" instead of "Nym" here. I have a problem with switching words sometimes...
