Questions, Shadows, and Singing Elves

Johan made his farewells for the night from Odin's, following Nym's slightly overdramatic exit in a cloud of magical sparks. He followed his feet, enjoying the cool breeze ruffling the edges of his coat as the sky continued to leech the leftover light and fade to a deep blue-black. He could feel a chuckle escape his lips as the faint sounds of singing caught his attention, and looking up he saw the sign for the Elfsong Tavern again looming overhead.

"Seems I liked this alehouse a bit more than I had previously thought. Well, the Syndicate dropped me off here before, and they doubtless had some eyes watching us all day before, so what more harm could it do?" he thought, before pushing open the door.

Inside the crowd was much more substantial, a particular group of mercenaries taking up the largest tavern, and looking around aimlessly with stunned expressions as the notes of the ghost's song echoed around the rafters.

Johan made his way over to the bar, and when the half-elf bartender was free, he caught her attention, and said "Lady Elandara, might I trouble you for a question for a moment?"

She cocked her head in curiosity, smiling and nodding, and after she finished drawing the set of thin beers for the table of mercenaries, she made her way over to his booth. He gave her a thin smile, and said "I wonder if I could trouble you a question about an individual I've seen a few times around the...less savory sections of Baldur's Gate; He, or it rather, is a shadowy figure, humanoid in general shape but impossible to clearly make out. Sound familiar by any chance?"

Diplomacy(+16): Rolled 19, so 35.

  1. "Sounds very familiar, but he finds you, you don't find him. Plus, if what I've heard is true, you're on his shit list."
She sat down next to him and leaned a bit closer. "Also, I'd watch your back. Honestly, from what I've heard you've made a few new friends who might come looking for you."

  2. Johan shrugged, hiding his distinct discomfort under an air of nonchalance.

"Well, they'll find me whether I'm here, in the Duchal Palace, or hiding in a barrel somewhere. Might as well enjoy a good drink and some pleasant company while I'm at it." Leaning forward, his tone becomes more serious. "But a name, Elandara, I need a name. A name I'll pay for as well," he says, pulling a short stack of gold coins from between his fingers as he says this.

Diplomacy to convince her to tell me, and Insight to see if she's being trustworthy (ie, if she knows if there's someone in the bar who is aiming to do Johan harm):

    Diplomacy(+16): Rolled 8, so 24.

    Insight(+6): Rolled 9, so 15.

  3. She looked furtively around the room before leaning close. "It's a shape that you can't make out in the darkenss... and you think I'm going to doublecross it over a few coins? I'm a bar manager - I'm not exactly one to risk too much of my life. But please, do watch out!"

  4. Johan snorted, barely keeping back an internal scowl as he smiled reassuringly.

"I'm not asking you to slip a knife in his...its ribs, dear. Just a name; he already knows mine, as you seem to be aware, and what harm could I possibly do with knowing his name?"

Bluffing, because Johan can and will do every single thing he can think of to get back at Mr. Nameless Shadow for the unwanted noggin graffiti:

    Bluff (+26): Rolled 8, so 34.

  5. "Listen, Johan, no one knows his name, or how to find him. He tends to find you. Are you sure you want to go down that route?"

  6. Johan's gonna insight if she's telling the truth about not knowing the name:

    Insight(+6): Rolled 11, so 16.

  7. She seems to be telling the truth. It's very likely that people just have a vague name they refer to the person by, but she isn't including that within the topic of "name."

  8. Ah, ok that makes sense. Johan will at least ask that, since he'd prefer to at least have some sort of common moniker he can use for later questions with other people

Johan blinked, nonplussed, and then chuckled despite himself. "Ah, my apologies Elandara. I wasn't asking for his true name or anything like that. Just seeing if there was something I could call him besides the decidedly-unkind epithets I use personally." He grinned, honest from amusement but still hoping he could find at least a nickname or title for 'That Shadowy Bastard.'

  9. "Well, he never calls himself anything." She said taking a swallow and then leaning close. "But those around here call him..." She looked around once again to make sure no one was watching. "mautfilayl" - which means "death in the night." She leaned away quickly putting her bar manager face back on.
"Anyway, I'm glad you decided to keep calm and in the open!" She said a bit too loud.

  10. Johan nodded once, just inclining his head enough for the half-elf bartender to see before cracking a grin and replying in kind. "Ah, well, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and even if it does kill you, death is always negotiable!"

He ordered a cheap drink, and took a booth in the corner of the tavern, nursing it for the night as he listened to the elf's haunting melody and watched the comings and goings of the night's patrons.

Unless you had anything to add, my thought would be that Johan would be here until the morning.
