Ruffians in the Dark!

"Oh, Darvin are you planning on leaving Baldur's Gate tomorrow?" Came an oily voice from the gangplank. "If so, we'd love if you'd remove all the garbage and refuse from our ship before you go." He said stepping onto the deck of the Lady Narath. The man scowled at the group assembled before him. "Well, what a freakshow..." He said stepping toward the table around at the assembled crew. "Is this the going away party you're hosting, Captain, before you finally remove yourself from our ship?" The man grinned and showed a set of stained and yellowed teeth.

"Hmmm..." Beranhond said standing and glaring down at the man. "Please explain yourself."
The man looked Beranhond up and down. Beranhond easily towered a foot over the man and the silvery armor under his cloak glinted in the lantern light. He changed his tone quickly as his eyes adjusted and noticed that none of the women at the table seemed remotely perturbed by his presence. Like most bullies they are quick to change their tone when confronted.

"Don't get all pissy with me." He said quickly. "I'm here for legitimate reasons on behalf of the Waldorf Syndicate - we have purchased the lien on the Lady Narath and are technically owners of the vessel. I was sent here to remind Darvin that he only has a short amount of time to repay the lien to use before we reclaim the vessel in the name of city of Baldur's Gate." He dropped a scroll on the table quickly before slinking back. Beranhond glared at him once more as he picked up the scroll and opened it up. The man cowered a bit before continuing, "You can argue it all you want, but the syndicate is short tempered with you!" He turned his head and caught a look at Johan and gave a very slight grin, before returning to his soured expression.

"So, if you're leaving town you might as well clear out, or you can visit the syndicate tomorrow with the cash." The man took a look over Nym, Violet, and Evelaen and realized that none of them seemed at all perturbed. Realizing that his usual ability to crudely intimidate people was wasted here he scampered back and across the gangplank into the darkness Beranhond watched the man run away and then handed the document to Evelaen who quickly poured over it.

"Alright, it looks like a standard legal document. It just states the dates of which The Lady Narath was passed into our company, which dates it returned, the bounty, and the syndicate which purchased the contract." She said reading over it quickly.

Beranhond sighed and rubbed his temple. "It looks like we might have to meet with them, or the city, or both, before we go off seeking treasure. Otherwise we might not have a ship at all when we return." He turned to Darvin. "What do you know about this syndicate?"

This will probably be a brief party split time, so use the comment section here to figure out the plan and then let us know who is going where and we'll handle the next part.

Skills to use:
Streetwise or history about the Waldorf Syndicate. Only Darvin, Johan, Violet, and Odin will really have anything to add here as Nym, Talathel, Evelaen, and BH are out of the loop.
Nature, while wonderful, isn't useful inside the city. Streetwise is the way to go.

Diplomacy works within conversations and for gathering info. Otherwise just RP the situation.

Dan, would you mind handling the syndicate?

  1. "How much is the lien?" Nym asked quietly.

  2. Johan stiffened at the mention of "freakshow," and when he saw the greasy man's smile his eyes narrowed, arms still crossed in front of him.

Looking to Darvin, he said flatly "So Darvin, are you facing a lien best paid in gold, platinum, or something richer? I tend to like to know how deep of a hole I'm about to step in."

If not for the other thugs, Johan would be dangling that guy over the railing to see why he's smirking.

  3. What time is it for us? Are we searching now or the following day?

  4. Sorry, one more question! What system and level are we using? Austin and I have our 4e level 10 characters from last time, which is preferable to us since we have a D&D Insider subscription with the 4e builder. I updated Nym to be a sorceress/bard to reflect her life changes. If we use 4e, I'm happy to share our login info so others can use the builder as well. :)

  5. Whit, I can handle the Syndicate, sure.

Erin, It's evening now (around 7:30 PM. It would be rather late to begin searching, but it's up to your group to decide that. As far as what system we're using, that's still being hotly debated.

  8. Nym stepped closer to Evelaen, and asked her, "How much is the lien?"

  9. Before Eva could answer Darvin piped up,"It's 3000 gold. It's due tomorrow. I didn't really care because I was so miserable. I figured if they killed me at least I'd be on the ship."

  10. Violet picked up the scroll and opened it, "It looks like it was due more than 5 months ago, actually. You have a week to pay or they will reclaim it and forcibly remove any persons remaining from the premises."

She turned and looked angrily at Darvin, "When were you planning to share the fact that you had this type of debt hanging over your head with the rest of the crew?"

  11. Nym whistled quietly at the sum, wondering if anyone had happened into an inheritance in the last few years.

  12. Talathel raised his eyebrows at the sum. He felt that Violet's question was a fair one, but was more annoyed that the happy reunion had come to an abrupt halt.

"I suppose our friend is out of extensions and options. Though perhaps if we all go together tomorrow, we can negotiate some sort of arrangement."

  13. Beranhond sighed and rubbed his temple. "Well, looks like we aren't leaving yet."
Evelaen set the letter on the table and then looked introspective. "Maybe now that the..." she trailed off for a moment. "What are we calling ourselves again? Anyway, maybe since the gang is back together we can go directly to the city council and see if the contract might be altered?"

  14. "I have some funds I can contribute if needed, but nowhere near 3000 gold," Nym murmured. This new gold-related headache was only making her more tired.

  15. Beranhond sighed, not entirely believing it had only been one day since he had reunited WTH the hang. "Well, unless anyone has some money stashed away we'd better get some sleep and handle it in the morning."

  16. Nym nodded slowly in agreement, and said to no one in particular, "Well, I think I'll be off then for the night... I'll see you tomorrow." She smiled half heartedly and whistled for Nesme. The horse trotted out of the dark, and Nym swung herself onto the horse's back. She waved to the group as she urged Nesme forward into the night.

  17. Staring flatly at the debt collector for a moment, Johan turned to Darvin, dipping his fingers into his coinpurse to bring out a pair of gold coins. He set them down in front of Darvin with a distinct clack, muttering "To either find a room should you wish to avoid nighttime visitors," he said with a nod of his head toward the thugs in the doorway. "Or as the start towards regaining your ship. Either way, I will be here in the morning so we can settle this nonsense."

Holding his fingers on the coins still, his voice took on a level edge. "However, if I find that you used these on whores and drink, I will grant you a third coin that you will need a cleric to remove and spend." With that, he stood, stiffly brushing past the debt collector as he strode onto the deck of the Lady Narath, before making his way into the city proper.

  18. Talathel gave Darvin a clasp on the shoulder in support. "Darvin, with your permission I would like to stay aboard this evening. We may want to have some people here tomorrow while some go into the city to try and negotiate for the ship. I'm guessing the Syndicate is not above the use of force to get what they want."

    ReplyDelete
  19. Darvin nodded at Talathel as he picked up Johan's coins.

"Thank you Talathel. I truly am sorry about the ship. I was heartbroken and lost."

    Darvin gestured towards the coins.

"Only 2998 gold pieces to go. Come let us find your old bunk." And with that he led his long lost friend below deck.

  20. Beranhond and Evelaen sat at the table while everyone else went off their separate ways.
"Well, this was a more productive day than I expected. I was thinking we'd have to track down Nym in some elven camp, look for Talathel in a rum barrel."
"They seem like lovely people. Well, Johan's not lovely, but he seems to have some dark skills that might be useful."
"As long as he doesn't give us away with his marbled sparkly skin in the sunlight."
"Stop it. You know that's just a rumor about vampires."
"Well, if it isn't true it should be."
They sat in silence for a few more moments.
"Well, I suppose we'd better go off and take care of the other task."
"Agreed, good thing they all left first!"
Beranhond caught Evelaen's smile and the two of them made their way off the vessel.
