A Quiet Conversation

As Nym road up, Darvin and Violet slowed to a stop. Violet was still very alert, and searching all around for more foes as she asked, not looking at either Darvin or Nym, "Those looked like slavers. Do you have any reason why they were after you? Other than the obvious, of course." With this last comment, she turned and winked at Nym, then resumed her scan of the grass and area around them.

  1. Note that neither Darvin nor Nym had seen this woman before she started attacking the slavers, so they don't actually know who she is, and she has not introduced herself yet, being still a bit more concerned about more combat first.

  2. The grassy areas around Kilink's abandoned campsite were free of traffic, movement, or anything else that looked dangerous. The arterial road that led from the abandoned campsite toward the center of the orcish camp was flooded with refugees, traders, and merchants. It seems that much of the camp was returning to somewhat normalcy, and that a larger portion were getting ready to move the entire campsite.

  3. Confident in her observation of no further threat, Violet slung her mace through a loop on her belt and turned to Nym and Darvin.
"Glad that's over. Are either of you hurt? I can help you with bleeding, disease, or poisoin, but it doesn't look like you're suffering any obvious effects from any of those, which is good. Unfortunately I have not yet restocked my healing potions, so we'll need to rest up or get some more of those..."
Seeing the slightly skeptical and wary looks that Darvin and Nym were giving her, Violet quickly stood up a bit straighter and offered something of a curtsy, saying "Ahh, you'll be wondering who I am. You may call me Violet. Your companion Beranhond said I might accompany you."

    ReplyDelete
  4. Nym had suspected this mysterious mace-wielding person might be Violet the Creepster. "Beranhond..." muttered Nym darkly narrowing her eyes and looking to where the Kilink camp was. "You don't perchance know where the rest of our party has gone off to, do you?" Nym asked Violet tiredly, half expecting the answer to be with the bastard red wizard whom Beranhond was now best friends, apparently.

  5. "When I talked to them, less than an hour ago, Beranhond and Talathel said they were headed to Thay. They were in the presence of a Thayvian wizard and another woman. They appear to have broken camp, but I do not know if they are still in the vicinity of the camp. I didn't think to ask when they would be leaving." Violet answered matter-of-factly, snapping to a position resembling at-attention as if she were being debriefed. The posture looked somewhat rehearsed but not perfect.

  6. Nym was amused by Violet's behavior. "Well, let's hope they don't end up slaves," she said, rolling her eyes. Of all the places they could have gone, did it really have to be Thay? Nym sighs loudly and looks Violet up and down.

What does Nym see? Species, clothing type, weapons, seriousness, etc

  7. Darvin had been standing around listening to the exchange.

"Violet, might I ask why you are interested in coming with us? Especially since we don't know where we are going." Just then Guybrush walked up, "And where have you been?," asked Darvin.

"My apologies, Captain. Nature called, as it were." Darvin just rolled his eyes.

  8. Violet is a rather tall human woman, with dark, brown/black hair. She is fit, and is wearing dark explorers' garb, with a cloak, a backpack, some assorted jewelry, and a pair of bracers that are intricate and draw the eye. Her demeanor appears to be rather serious, though several of her comments have shown that she has a bit of wry humor.

She turns to answer Darvin's question. "We share a common enemy. I have been contracted to hunt the high priest of the Dark God that has arisen in the West, and as you told the orcs yesterday, when you requested their aid, you are looking for help in your quest. It would be foolish for me to attempt my task without your assistance, and it would be foolish for you to attempt yours without my assistance. Do you know why you might have attracted the attention of slavers?"

    ReplyDelete
  9. "Most likely because we were in the most glorious act of lovemaking."

    ReplyDelete
  10. "The most glorious act?" Violet eyed both Darvin and Nym very openly, and grinned. "I'm sure you were." More seriously, she continued, "That would make sense. And with the disruption of the battle last night, they might be more bold today. Shall we get our wounds taken care of?" She asked, gesturing to the camp.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Nym looked more than a little embarrassed at Darvin's proclamation about their 'glorious act' and turned bright red. She poked at the arrow wound in her leg and mumbled, "Yes, let's take care of our wounds..."

    ReplyDelete
  12. "Do either of you have any skill with healing, or do we need to find a healer or potions-seller?" Violet asked, as she began walking back to the camp.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "At the moment, I'm not much good for anything," replied Nym. She cocked her head to the side and studied Violet for a moment, wondering what her feelings on magic users might be. Nym had been lucky to fall in with an accepting group, and she could only hope this human would feel the same.

    ReplyDelete
  14. "You seemed to be good for something just a little while ago, based on this talk of 'glorious acts'." Violet said, nodding her head towards Darvin, before bursting out laughing. She laughs for several long seconds before struggling to regain control of herself. "Darvin, how about you? Any healing abilities?"

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nym wasn't sure if she was offended or amused or embarrassed or all three. She huffed to show her displeasure and started digging through her saddlebags for some herbs for her wound. Once Nym found what she wanted, she gently slid herself off of Nesme and began cleaning and patching her leg up.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Please roll a healing checking for that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. In response to to Violet's question Darvin starts digging around in his backpack, "Um, I think so...let me check my character sheet. Ah yes, it appears I have a rank in it." Darvin stuffs the paper back into his pack while Violet and Nym just stare at him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Of course, natural twenties do not mean instant success with skill checks... but that will do.

Nym is able to get out all of the wood that would have festered in the cut. However she realizes that although the roots she has will dull the pain for a little while it will need stitches to properly close and heal.

You have a -1 to speed (not that will matter), but you won't lose any more hit points from the wound. You will need to track down a healer's kit to properly heal the wound. Or find a healer/healing potion.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Seeing that Nym was still limping (Do I need to roll perception to notice that?) and that Darvin had obviously never used a healing kit in his life, Violet led them to a small tent where she talked a man into letting them look at his wares.

How much are healing potions and healing kits here? Violet has no healing skill, so she'll have to rely on scrolls and potions.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Violet also looks in the shop to see if there are any magical items for healing, especially items that might have a number of charges or a number of uses per day.

I can't access my character sheet at work, and I don't remember if I have any ranks in appraise, or I'd give you a check.

  21. He has a couple of cure light wounds (1d8+5) potions. He says there is a lot of demand with all the wound, but is willing to sell them for 200 gold each.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nym doesn't have anywhere close to 200 gold, so she simply leaves the shop in search of someone willing to do a bit of patchwork quickly and cheaply.

  23. It takes Nym a while as everyone is quite suspicious of the group but, you eventually find an old orcish woman who is willing to stitch up your wound.

"What are these marks all over your body?" She asks as she pulls out some thread and a needle.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nym brushed the marks on her arm. "I honestly don't know..." she replied, frowning. When the woman finished stitching Nym's leg, she stood to leave, but then turned and asked, "What happened here last night?"

    ReplyDelete
  25. The old woman lifted her head to Nym.
"An earthly horror." She said grimacing. "Such a fright has never befallen this camp. I only saw glimpses before I sought safety, but I promise that some sort of large enraged beast attacked the camp. It glowed as if covered in scars!" Her eyes widened. "There were fires, flames, and the sounds of death all around." She took a few deep breaths while trying to calm herself. "I heard that there was a group of wizards who tried to stop it, but failed. Others say that the creature seemed to be searching out these wizards. If that is true, the beast was rather indiscriminate about the damage it caused while hunting them."

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nym turned fully around at this. "Who were these wizards? What were they doing here?" In her heart, Nym knew the wizards were Zalkar's Thayvian companions, but why had they been here... and were any left?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Violet decides to try a different tack. "Have you had much disease or poison in the camp? I could make you vials of Antiplague or Antitoxin in exchange for your potions." She sizes up the shopkeeper, obviously getting into the swing of the trade.

  28. "It was noble of the wizard's to try and stop that monster. Such evil shouldn't be allowed in a place like this." The woman had taken back to starting at Nym. Her eyes fell upon the marks on her body.
"Let me see those marks on your skin again child... they might be wounds that should be examined."

    ReplyDelete
  29. So... did Violet just stay in the shop while Nym left? Where is Darvin? Nick... you need to keep up with the posting.

    ReplyDelete
  30. For Violet...
"Ah, now that is a much better deal. I would trade you one for one for a bottle of anti-toxin."

    ReplyDelete
  31. "But who were they and why were they here?" persisted Nym. She waved the orc woman to sit. "The marks do not hurt me, but I think I could be of more help to this place if I knew more about what you were dealing with."

    ReplyDelete
  32. "Dealing with?" She said laughing. "I heard that these wizards were here interested in seeking our help, which is about what I heard about you and your companions. The rumors are that they dined with our clan-chief the night before and that we were on the cusp of a deal with them to assist in their struggle against the dark God rising on the sword coast. Of course, I don't think we will be helping anyone now that our camp is in disarray following the onslaught of that beast."

    ReplyDelete
  33. "Of course... What did the beast look like?" asked Nym.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "You must remember that I was far away." She said moving her hands to scratch the small patch of beard on her face. "It seemed like it was ten or fifteen feet tall and had bright red eyes. It was also covered in white lines that glowed and pulsed. It made it look golem like. Some have whispered that those were arcane symbols on its skin and that it was animated by some demonic creature."

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, I would say that Nym left to look for another way to heal her wounds, and Violet stayed to try to make a trade.

Violet said to the salesperson, "It is a deal. I'd like 4 potions. May I use a small bit of your table here to craft the antitoxin?"

The DC for antitoxin is 25, and it will cost me 25 GP to make. Can I take 10 on it? How long will it take if I do or don't take 10 on it?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I will treat taking a ten as the same as a roll. Now, if you wanted to take a 20 it would take longer.
    1. Find the item’s price in silver pieces (1 gp = 10 sp).
    2. Find the DC on Table: Craft Skills.
    3. Pay one-third of the item’s price for the cost of raw materials.
    4. Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s worth of work.
It costs 50gp. I can't find that table right now, but I am sure you can.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Found it, DC is 20.
So, to do it you will need to divide by 7 to capture each day of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  38. calculate, not capture. I cannot type today.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nym thanked the orcish woman and left wondering if orcs found females with beards attractive like dwarves. She felt uneasy about knowing the attacking monster was covered with arcane marks like she now was and attacked the camp while she had been unconscious. She carefully covered as many markings as she could with clothing, hopped on Nesme, patted Pipper's head, and hurried back to where she'd left her friends.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Darvin decided he didn't need any potions considering his companions were stocking up. He had decided to tag alone on with Violet to observe their new companion and see what exactly he had gotten himself into.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Currently reworking the craft system with Whittaker. This is a one-time solution so I can do trade and get on with the quest while we work it out.

Violet agreed to the price of 2 antitoxin vials for 2 potions of heal and got to work. She pulled a portable alchemist's kit out of her backpack, grabbing vials and small pouches one at a time and setting them all out as she began to work.

    DC to make Antitoxin: 25
    Take 10 on Craft(Alchemy): 25 - Automatic success
    Time taken: 2 hours

As she worked, she talked to Darvin, being respectful of the work area was being allowed but not engaging the shopkeeper in conversation. "Where do you plan to go once first from here, Darvin?"

    ReplyDelete
  42. Darvin watched Violet create her potions and participated in the conversation, "I suppose the most likely destination would be back to the ship. To tell the rest of the crew about their comrades. After that, I am not sure."

    ReplyDelete
  43. "Do you have any ideas? There are plenty of stories of bold heroes perishing in confrontations even with lesser gods. Whoever this god that is rising, I am sure the path ahead will be perilous without enough preparation." As she talked, she tapped a tiny scoop of fine gray powder into some creamy green liquid and twirled the vial between her hands.

    ReplyDelete
  44. "Really, Violet, I haven't given it a lot of thought. Its been a rather emotional last few hours. I don't want to make any decisions before I get back to the ship and get the rest of my crew." As he was finishing this up, he heard muffled voices coming from his pocket. He dug in and grabbed the speaking stone. As he pulled it out he heard Beranhond talking to someone.

"Beranhond, is that you? Where did you guys bloody run off to?"

You can answer me in the other comment section, but I figured I would at least respond to Violet here as well.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Violet listened in, interested in hearing what was being said.
